Investing in Teachers, Improving Early Literacy
About us
CLI's mission is closing the gap in reading achievement between children in poverty and their middle-class counterparts. Effective literacy instruction combined with great children's books is the heart and soul of CLI's programs. The majority of children in the classrooms we serve are from economically disadvantaged families with little or no access to books. When we furnish classroom collections (up to 200 children's books) and assist pre-K through 3rd grade teachers in literacy instruction, we work to give these children an essential tool for academic success and an opportunity to develop a life-long love of reading. Headquartered in Philadelphia since our founding in 1988, CLI has been funded by government and private grants as well as many generous individuals. Our clients have included the school districts of Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Newark, and Philadelphia.

As the temperature is rising, what better way to cool down than with a milkshake? If you're in the Philadelphia region, head on over to Bassetts Ice Cream in Reading Terminal, and enjoy the PB&J Shake! A creamy, indulgent milkshake topped with whipped cream, decadent blueberry jam, and a rich peanut butter drizzle, it's a treat you won't want to miss. For every PB&J shake sold, Children's Literacy Initiative will receive a portion of the profits to continue our work in a school near you. If you go, snap a pic and tag us!🍦 Each month, Bassetts chooses a local non-profit to partner with and designs a special milkshake or sundae just for them. Bassetts' staff come up with creative ideas for the special’s name, flavor, and toppings; we're so honored to be their partner!

What does it mean to "go beyond the bookshelf?" When we think about the importance of literacy, we cannot stop at the learning that happens schools. It's imperative to extend our focus beyond classroom learning. We must consider how a child's identity—embracing elements such as ethnicity, race, and social class—can be enriched, while also exposing them to the expansive world of empathy and understanding. Explore the essence of going beyond the bookshelf in our latest blog post: https://hubs.la/Q02xLhbV0
