Today at Apco Nexus, I had the opportunity to present Carbyne’s vision for the future of 911 to a group of 100 policy makers and public safety officials. Here are four points which I thought were interesting from the Q&A session that followed: - There is wide agreement that PSAPs should immediately begin using AI on “backend” and non-mission critical work. We’ll see it first in things like training, scheduling shifts, records management, and triaging of admin line calls. Using AI even only for backend work can take significant stress off overworked 911 call takers. - PSAPs have a lot of data available to them already. The issue is not so much the quantity of data but its integration onto few screens and the ability to draw actionable insights in real time from it. AI will be a game changer. - Shortstaffing is the #1 issue and to solve it we need to attract young talent. Deploying best in class technology that young employees are happy and proud to use and incorporates things like mental health services can help with retention. - Global macro trends from rising crime rates to rising citizen expectations for transparency will require PSAPs to do even more. Cloud native technologies are the basis to unlocking efficiencies necessary to maintain high SLAs with a higher volume of emergency calls.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we're shedding light on a critical but overlooked issue: the emotional toll on 911 call responders. Carbyne and NENA's latest Pulse of 911 survey reveals alarming insights from 1,335 emergency communications professionals across the nation. From severe understaffing to high-stress levels, particularly among women, the findings highlight the urgent need for better support systems. Key takeaways: 75% of Emergency Control Centers lack budget for additional staffing 84% struggle to fill open positions due to stress, long hours, and low pay Only 50% of trainees make it through probation 85% of respondents report burnout symptoms Women are disproportionately affected, with higher stress levels and marital strain. It’s time we address this crisis. Read the full blog, https://lnkd.in/ebC_CZFB by Deborah Szajngarten, our VP of Marketing to understand the challenges and explore potential solutions.
