#HAVhope Friday is a national day of awareness highlighting hospitals’ efforts to combat violence in the workplace and the communities they serve. #HealthCareWorkers and patients always deserve safety, especially in healing environments like hospitals.  

Hospital leaders and #HealthCareWorkers are extremely busy taking care of patients and keeping our communities healthy. It says something about the importance of keeping THEM safe that so many showed up this week to speak with legislators about AB 977 – legislation that provides a crucial step toward reducing hospital workplace violence. So grateful to all who took time from their busy days to advocate for these vital protections: Claude Stang, Denise McDonald, Dean Sobcoviak, CPP, CHPA, Denise Navellier, Joe Gregorich, Jon Cowan, Nicholas Testa, MD FACEP, Rachel Selleck, and Wendi Thomas.

The #2024emergencyservicesforum was a great success thanks to the many thoughtful participants, speakers, and experts who contributed to crucial conversations about EMS challenges, behavioral health system implications for emergency departments, and patient safety practices, among others. Many thanks to keynote speaker RaDonda Vaught for sharing your deeply personal experiences and advocacy, esteemed panelists for your thoughtful contributions, and forum participants who made this event possible.

It’s #MentalHealthMatters Day & #MentalHealthAwareness Month: Today & always, we’re reminded of the importance of behavioral health access & support. DYK 1 of 8 hospitalizations each year involves a patient with substance use disorder and 15% of hospitalizations involve patients with #MentalHealth disorders?  Hospitals & #HealthCareWorkers are there for Californians when they need mental health & substance use disorder care — now we need CA to help support behavioral health, patients & hospitals by passing 3 #CALeg bills: AB 1316, authored by Asm. Jacqui Irwin & Asm. Chris Ward, would require Medi-Cal to cover emergency services for psychiatric conditions — a critical step to support patients in crisis.  SB 1320 would require insurers to develop a process to reimburse providers for mental health & substance use disorder services — a noteworthy advancement in supporting hospitals as they support patients, led by Aisha Wahab, MBA. AB 1842 would allow doctors to prescribe certain medications for substance use disorder treatment without seeking insurer authorization — a lifesaving action for patients who need care fast, led by Eloise Reyes. Huge thanks to Mental Health America of California for hosting #MentalHealthMatters Day, continuing to highlight the importance of behavioral health, & working to end the stigma for mental health challenges.
