The date celebrates the birthday of former player Nilton Santos, who would have turned 98 years old. One of the greatest in history and idol of Botafogo, Nilton Santos would have turned 98 years old this Tuesday (16). Because of the date, Botafogo Day is also celebrated on this day, in honor of the eternal number 6, who passed away in 2013, who continues in the memory of the fans and his favorite team. On social media, the club and fans celebrate the date annually. The Brazilian football giant was placed in the all-time selection in 1998, alongside Garrincha, another great Botafogo idol. In 2020, he was elected by FIFA as the best left- back of all time. Then, on July 5, 2007, the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro sanctioned May 16 as “Botafogo Day”, in honor of the great idol.
