Last week, Boston Trust Walden colleagues proudly participated in the 2024 4K Trail Run on Cathleen Stone Island, formerly Thompson Island, to support the Outward Bound School. The funds raised by our collective efforts will help provide free educational opportunities for Boston students through hands-on learning and outdoor adventure. At Boston Trust Walden, we have been examining AI across multiple dimensions, including its impact on society, individual companies, and how we operate our own business. While we suspect the full impact will not be known for years, the ramp-up in spending is occurring now. It is also increasingly apparent that there are pitfalls and risks associated with the latest technology, in addition to likely opportunities. Last year’s stock market rally continued unabated in the first quarter of 2024, with gains once again driven by a narrow group of large technology-related companies. The economy’s growth trajectory has also continued, albeit at a moderate pace. With economic momentum and inflation still running above its target rate, the Federal Reserve has yet to cut its policy interest rates – a delay to investors’ previous expectations. A robust job market may be a key factor to watch in changes to that stance, and labor data is indicating more equilibrium. Nonetheless, strong economic fundamentals bode well for prospects of corporate profit growth. And despite the stock market’s recent rally, there remain many reasonably valued shares of companies with the sustainable business models we favor.
