Last Friday was #NationalBiketoWorkDay and associates in our Bon Secours -- Greenville market came out in full force to participate! They met up along the Swamp Rabbit Trail to bike to the hospital, where breakfast goodies were waiting. Participating in National Bike to Work Day was a fantastic way for our team to contribute to their own health and well-being while also taking a positive step towards environmental stewardship. To further celebrate the occasion, two brand new bike racks were installed just in time for the occasion at Bon Secours -- St. Francis Downtown Hospital so moving forward, all cyclists will have a place to park their bikes.

Esly Banegas’ heart condition caused palpitations, fatigue and shortness of breath, and made daily activities, including exercise, difficult. She was hospitalized multiple times and lived with chronic stress about her health. Elsy's physicians had limited success trying to control the arrhythmia with medication. Esly lives in Honduras, where the surgical procedure to treat her condition is not available. “I feared that from one moment to the next another episode could occur,” Esly says. “It was not a good quality of life.” Through BSMH’s Global Ministries program, Esly received the heart procedure she needed at Bon Secours -- St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. The day of her heart surgery was, appropriately, Valentine’s Day. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gXyNkjF5

The Bon Secours -- St. Francis Health System (Greenville, South Carolina) aims to improve the health of Greenville Market’s population both inside its facilities and in the community. Community outreach is an important focus of this work. To achieve these goals, the Bon Secours Community Health team focuses on bringing health care access and other services to marginalized communities. Community Health Director Sean Dogan said the team focuses on addressing the community’s health and social concerns highlighted in the 2023 Bon Secours Community Health Needs Assessment. The two main issues in the assessment were access to equitable care and affordable housing. “I hope that we can positively impact our community and really give hope to those who are dealing with issues in their health,” Sean says. This year, we're commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Sisters of Bon Secours. They began their mission of serving the poor, sick and dying in their homes 200 years ago in 1824 in Paris. We continue to reflect on the history and perseverance of the Sisters of Bon Secours and their spirit and readiness to go anywhere and care for the needs of the vulnerable, extending good help to those in need of healing compassion. Thank you, Sisters, for continuing to extend compassion and care to those in need.

Earlier this month, Bon Secours -- St. Mary’s Hospital (Richmond, Virginia) put a new CuddleCot into service after it was donated by a local family who experienced the tragic stillbirth of their daughter, Riley, just 10 months before. The CuddleCot, a cooling bassinet, offers solace to bereaved parents by preserving their baby’s appearance after death, allowing parents to begin the healing process as they bid farewell to their beloved baby. “We are so grateful that we were able to use a CuddleCot and that we had the gift of time with Riley: time to hold her, talk to her and rock her. And while we only spent about 27 hours with her, we were able to make memories that would last a lifetime,” said the Green family. The Green family was able to donate this gift after raising money via a GoFundMe campaign, through which they sought to help other bereaved families and create a legacy for their daughter. “The pain of losing a child before they even have the chance to take their first breath is a heartbreak that no parent should ever have to endure. In such moments of profound grief, the CuddleCot becomes a precious companion by providing invaluable time for parents to create memories and cherish moments that would otherwise be lost,” added Amy Wagner, DNP, administrative director of women’s and children’s services for St. Mary’s Hospital. Thanks to several generous donors, CuddleCots are available at all of Bon Secours’ labor and delivery units in Richmond.
