Accessibility for all Words by Sumayyah Perine, Disability ERG Co-Lead Today, we had the honor of hosting Guinness World Records holder and paraclimber Anoushé Husain MBE as a virtual speaker for #GlobalAccessibilityAwarenessDay. She told us, "As Bitizens, you have the power to make the world accessible by default. Every little bit counts." It's important that Bitly recognizes events like #GAAD because it aligns with our commitment to be as inclusive as we are innovative. Bitly is dedicated to creating a more equitable world in tech and beyond, and we want to continue to foster a culture of inclusion. --- Anoushe Husain has battled hardships throughout her life as she navigated living with a disability, but that never stopped her from living her life on her terms. As a child, she didn't consider herself disabled, she just considered herself different as she was born with a limb difference. She acknowledges the grief in her life when it comes to her traumas but has moved from a life of fear to a life of acceptance. Even with chronic illness and being an ambulant wheelchair user, she owns her body and is grateful for what she can do with it. Despite everything, she's a civil servant, an advocate and a Guinness World Record-breaking para climber. She loves climbing, as it taught her to be kinder to herself. She believes that we could all play a part in making this world a more accessible place. Is your content accessible? Are the places you go to accessible? Are you making yourself accessible? You could learn about the disability issues going on in your local area and learn about how disability is protrayed in media. Don't judge people just by looking at them. You don't know if they have an invisible disability and how they might present. Her advice? Offer help and be mindful when a disabled person says no. Call in not-so-great behavior and have these conversations with friends, family and peers. --- She left us with these parting words, “Climbing doesn’t judge me. It’s taught me to be kind to myself.” We can all use a little bit more of that for ourselves and others. --- (And, of course, thank you to Marcel Eichner, our other Disability ERG co-lead!)
