Rich Jaroslovsky's career goal was to be the D.C. correspondent for a major newspaper. He achieved that - at 22 - for a little outlet called The Wall Street Journal. In 1994, he combined his two loves - technology and journalism - and started WSJ.com. Through that role, his founding of the Online News Association in 1999, his work at Bloomberg and SmartNews, and his role as a lecturer at numerous journalism schools over the years, Rich Jaroslovsky is quite possibly the most important person in the history of digital #journalism. Rich recently joined us to discuss his multi-faceted career, digital journalism’s next chapter (hint: AI), and his connections to everyone from tech journalism legend Walt Mossberg to Canada’s finest singer/songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot. This is Pressing Matters from Big Valley Marketing, the #podcast that brings you conversations with the top media and influencers in #B2BTech. Enjoy. https://lnkd.in/g7FhCreT

One of our newest members of Big Valley, Amber Daugherty, MCM was recently added to the Institute for Public Relations Measurement Commision, who lead the way in PR education and research. Congratulations, Amber! 👏 Her passion for demonstrating the value and impact of PR for clients is one of the many reasons we are excited to add her to our team of experts. Check out Amber and her thoughts on outputs as a measure of success in PR. 💡↓
The latest study from Muck Rack shows that PR practitioners are *still* focusing on outputs to measure success. Stories placed, reach and key message pull-through are all about information being shared with audiences. But the real question you have to be ready to answer is "so what?" As in, you had seven stories placed in top-tier media - so what? Did your target audience see the stories? Did they change their perspective on the issue you're talking about? Are they more likely to buy something from you when they're in the market? Will they apply to work for you? How do you know? Outputs are not ends - they're proxy metrics that will hopefully indicate movement towards your company's bigger goals - improved satisfaction/support, reputation, sales, etc. Why does this matter? Because until we figure out how to demonstrate how our work connects to the things our executive teams care about, we're going to continue having a hard time asking for increased budgets, resources, etc. And when times get tough, we might be the first place money is taken away from - because the only contribution we're making is 'placing stories.' And we're unable to answer the question "so what?"

"In an era where we are always being sold to, especially online, we’ve gotten very good at tuning out ads, which extends to real life at events like #RSAC." According to Big Valley's Arianna Crawford, the answer (in part) is a lot more surprise and delight. Why shouldn't a booth be fun to visit? And how can we make conferences more engaging overall? 🎉 Be optimistic in your conference planning. Surprise and delight isn't just a concept for user experience and journey mapping. If you're not inspired, why would anyone else be? 👯 Plan with social in mind, and not just the social calendar. What are your goals for capturing attention and demand? Social media can help ahead of, during and after the conference. 😍 Remember that your audience is human! Conferences are often overwhelming, and creating moments for recharging will attract interest and drive booth traffic. Win/win! Was this year's #RSAC the G.O.A.T? Yes -- for many reasons, including the opening keynote by the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the spectacular closing performance by Grammy-award winner Alicia Keys. The Big Valley Marketing team was everywhere, from attending enlightening sessions, on #AI governance, #CISO accountability and more, to staffing media interviews on Broadcast Alley and creating unique social media content live on the show floor. We wanted to share some our insights from this year's show. Enjoy! https://lnkd.in/ggP2auBv Credit to Karen Burke, Taylor Voges, Arianna Crawford, Andy Shane, Alexis H., and Adriana Nguyen!
