    Adventure awaits.

Trust your gut and go to work. Derek Andersen shared a lot with Reference Group Group last night. He shared stories of perseverance and grit. Luck and heart. Something I saw in Derek as a freshman in college was his innate self belief. He knew that he could do it.”It” over the years has changed but he was gonna get it done. As I’ve interviewed great founders I believe that inner belief is the #1 predictor of outlier outcomes. When everything says no you can’t, you say yes, I can. There’s a famous quote I love - “whether you can or you can’t, you’re right.” Derek shared some great stories about acquisition offers, fundraising, selling companies, convincing huge companies to pay more for your product, building teams, when you know you have product market fit (google Steve Blank if you want to know more) and how to build something that people truly want. One of my favorite parts of Derek’s mindset is he has always played the long game. In relationships, he always has sought to give and create value, believing that value would accrue back to him over time. A key takeaway for founders from last night was the idea that you startup is like a body on the brink of death, it’s in the ICU and you’re trying everything you can to revive the body, electro shock whatever, anything to give it a pulse. Once you get the pulse, you gotta keep giving it constant effort until it makes it to a recovery room and then with a lot luck, it gets to leave the hospital and walk on it’s own. There must be urgency and focus. Thank you Derek for sharing your wisdom with us and for everyone in attendance who made it a special night! AJ Pepper Diogo Myrrha Renato V. Aaron McReynolds Landon Glenn Rachelle Morris Luke Gunderson Norm Krantz Sunny Washington Neylan McBaine Dan Caffee Shane Rowley Jon Bradshaw Kent Richeson Darren Siegrist Eric Lo Skyler Meine Tyler Babb David Oldham and so many more great builders!
