We love it when our teams make the time to find opportunities to give back to our communities because supporting our neighbors is an important part of our culture at Belk. Recently, two of our Charlotte, NC-area store teams from Carolina Place Mall and SouthPark Mall joined forces to help out at Second Harvest Food Bank. The two teams worked together for several hours to help the nonprofit sort their food donations. "It was a great opportunity to not only give back but also allow our teams to network with each other," said Laken W., SouthPark Store Manager. We recently celebrated our “Best of Belk” winners with an event in our hometown of Charlotte, NC. The outstanding associates, as well as our leadership team, gathered together to honor the accomplishments they achieved last year. As part of the event, attendees worked on a community giveback project to help two of our local Project Hometown charities, Read Charlotte and Classroom Central. Project Hometown is a commitment to making our hometown of Charlotte stronger by partnering with local organizations that work to improve our community. Read Charlotte is a community initiative that unites educators, community partners, and families to improve children’s reading from birth to third grade. As a capacity-building intermediary, the organization supports local partners to apply evidence-based knowledge about effective reading instruction and interventions, high-quality execution, continuous improvement, and data analysis to improve reading outcomes. At Classroom Central, they believe every child deserves a level educational playing field, because when teachers and students have the resources they need, every class becomes world-class. They empower teachers and students in 248 schools across six Charlotte-area school districts, providing supplies and resources through their Free Store, Mobile Free Store, and other community-supported programs. Our “Best of Belk” attendees assembled over 700 kits to donate to Classroom Central on behalf of Read Charlotte. The donation included art kits, pencil pouch kits, and homework kits, all of which included much-needed school supplies, including a note of encouragement for the recipients. Supporting our communities has been an important part of our culture ever since our doors first opened over 135 years ago. We encourage our associates to find meaningful ways to give back to causes important to them. With April being Earth Month, over 30 associates from our corporate office in Charlotte, NC, chose to participate in the “Clean the Queen” event in the “Queen City”. The cause focuses on contributing to the reduction of our carbon footprint and the preservation of our planet by helping to clean up Charlotte. Thank you to our associates who participated by picking up litter and recyclables along a stretch of roadway that afternoon. This yearly celebration highlights the accomplishments of our store teams, supply chain teams, and corporate office associates who exemplify the best of our company. We recently partnered with The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte, NC, for its local Youth of the Year competition to help outfit the finalists for their interviews and presentations. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor granted to an exemplary teen every year for their leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. Now in its 77th year, the program honors America’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to a great future. The local winner, Briana Higgins, a junior at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, was awarded a $10,000 college scholarship. She will go on to compete in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s North Carolina competition in Charlotte later this month. As a committed corporate partner, we’re sending Senior Manager of Community Relations & DEI, Brittany M., to represent Belk as a judge in the North Carolina statewide competition, and we will also outfit the state and regional winners!
