Win-Win or No Deal By Brian Tracy [With permission of Brian Tracy @www.briantracy.com] In successful negotiation, both parties should be fully satisfied with the result and feel that they have each "won" or no deal should be made at all. Consistent with your determination to enter into agreements that preserve long-term relations between the parties, you should always seek an outcome that satisfies both. Remember, you always reap what you sow. Any settlement or agreement that leaves one party dissatisfied will come back to hurt you later, sometimes in ways that you cannot predict. Tough Negotiating A very tough negotiator told me proudly about a hard deal he had wrung out of a national organization for the distribution of his company's products. He had demanded and threatened and negotiated an agreement that paid him considerably more, both in up-front payments and in percentages of sales, than any of the other clients for which his company distributed. Win-Lose The businessman had negotiated a deal that was a "win-lose," with him winning and the other losing. But those on the losing side had no incentive to fulfill the implied commitment to market the products. They had no real incentive to go forward with this person again. You should be clear in advance that you are committed to reach a solution that is satisfactory to both. If it does not entail a win for both parties, you should simply refuse to make any deal at all. Win-Win When you are determined to achieve a win-win solution to a negotiation, and you are open, receptive, and flexible in your discussions, you will often discover a third alternative that neither party had considered initially but that is superior to what either of you might have thought of on your own. Make Yourself Clear Once you have decided that you are only going to agree to a settlement that is satisfactory to both parties, this doesn't mean that you have to accept any arrangement that you consider best. With your values and your intentions clear, you are now in a position to utilize every strategy and tactic available to you to get the very best deal for both of you—one that assures that you both end up happy with the arrangement. Action Exercise Think win-win in all your interactions with others, at work and at home. Actively seek a middle way that satisfies the most pressing desires of both parties. Be creative in suggesting alternatives that get both you and the other person more of what you want. VOCABULARY [From a Merriam-Webster Unabridged ‘Word of the Day’] blench (BLENCH) (verb) – “He refused to blench (to draw back or turn aside from lack of courage) during the negotiating sessions.” [“Blench” Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary] "My people and I have come to an agreement which satisfies us both. They are to say what they please, and I am to do what I please." -Frederick the Great [King of Prussia] Picture from https://vist.ly/37w6j subscription #leadership

Three Powerful Techniques to Get Better at Habits By Leo Babauta [With permission of Leo Babauta @zenhabits.net] For many who started the year with great aspirations and goals of creating new habits … it’s coming to the time of year when lots of people start to falter on their new habits. That’s completely normal, but we can do better. We can figure out how to overcome the difficulties that often plague our habit-changing attempts: We delay starting on the habit. Our minds start to rebel from the tediousness of sticking to a plan. We rationalize not doing the habit. With those very common obstacles in mind, I’m going to share three powerful techniques for overcoming them. They take effort to implement, but you can do this! Here are the techniques: Focus on just starting. Set a trigger when you’re going to do the habit each day — let’s say you’re going to meditate when you wake up, or work out when you get home, or read during your lunch break. When the time comes to do the habit (the trigger happens), just launch into doing the habit, without delay. Focus on getting good at this skill of starting. When the trigger happens, have a reminder note nearby that says, “Just start.” Lower the barrier to doing the habit by making it smaller (just meditate for a minute or two), create barriers to doing your usual distractions, and just take the smallest first step. You’re going to practice getting good at starting, every day. If you master this, you’ll also get a lot better at not procrastinating with other stuff! Be completely with the habit. When you do start the habit, it’s very common to focus on getting through the habit, trying to complete the task. This is a mindset that most of us have all day long — we are just rushing through our tasks, trying to finish each one. But actually this is not helpful for habits. We want to be completely present with the habit, really feel the texture of the experience, and imagine there is no end, that this moment is all there is and ever will be. It can transform the habit, turning it into a mindfulness practice, and we can even find gratitude for being able to do it. We don’t have to do it, we get to do it. This is an act of love for ourselves, and we are doing it to not only be compassionate with ourselves, but to enable ourselves to be more present, compassionate and committed to serving others. Do What Has the Greatest Positive Impact on Your Life By Brian Tracy   The mark of the superior thinker is his or her ability to accurately predict the consequences of doing or not doing something. Thinking continually about the potential consequences of your choices, decisions, and behaviors is one of the very best ways to determine what is really important to you.   Your attitude toward time—your "time horizon”—has an enormous impact on your behavior and your choices. People who have a long-term view of their lives and careers always seem to make much better decisions about their time and activities than people who give very little thought to the future. Long-time perspective is one of the most important factors in determining your success in life. So what is it that can help you the most?   Think about your future. Successful people have a clear future orientation. They think five, 10 and 20 years out into the future. They analyze their choices and behaviors in the present to make sure that they are consistent with the long-term future that they desire. Having a clear idea of what is really important to you in the long-term makes it much easier for you to make better decisions about your priorities in the short-term. Determine the consequences. By definition, something that is important has long-term potential consequences. Something that is unimportant has few or no long-term potential consequences. Before starting on anything, you should always ask yourself, what are the potential consequences of doing or not doing this task? The clearer you are about your future intentions, the greater influence that clarity will have on what you do in the moment. With a clear long-term vision, you are much more capable of evaluating an activity in the present and to assure that it is consistent with where you truly want to end up. Make it a top priority. If there is a task or activity with large potential positive consequences, make it a top priority and get started on it immediately. If there is something that can have large potential negative consequences if it is not done quickly and well, that becomes a top priority as well. Keep motivated. Motivation requires motive. The greater the positive potential impact that an action or behavior of yours can have on your life, once you define it clearly, the more motivated you will be to overcome procrastination and get it done quickly. Review your list of tasks, activities, and projects regularly and continually ask yourself, which one project or activity, if I did it in an excellent and timely fashion, would have the greatest positive impact on my life?   [With permission of Brian Tracy @www.briantracy.com]          "To get the most out of your life, plant in your mind seeds of constructive power that will yield fruitful results." -Ralph Waldo Emerson  #leadership #motivation #success #business #entrepreneur #inspiration #mindset #entrepreneurship #coaching #love #leader #goals
