  • 👰💍 Imagine needing emergency surgery for ovarian cysts the night before your wedding! That’s the incredible challenge Megan Abernathy Nault faced when sharp abdominal pain sent her to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Wilkes Medical Center. Despite the urgency, Megan's dream of marrying Aidan wasn't postponed. When she learned that the doctors could control her pain and delay the surgery until the next morning, she made a heartfelt plea to her medical team: “I want to wake up from my surgery married.” 💖 Thanks to the compassionate and quick-thinking staff, including Malissa Reel, RN, and Dr. Cassandra Hornbuckle, a beautiful wedding ceremony was organized right in the hospital. “Requests like Megan’s are not challenges; they’re just a part of my role as a healthcare provider during people’s most vulnerable experiences,” said Malissa. The wedding party relocated, decorations were up, and the vows were exchanged in a boardroom-turned-chapel. The nurses even found the couple a larger room as a “honeymoon suite.” Megan was overwhelmed by the support, saying, “They transformed something that was horrible into something special.” She praised Dr. Hornbuckle for going above and beyond, noting, “She answered every single question I had. She was not my regular doctor before, but I want to keep seeing her.” Diagnosed with ovarian cysts that required emergency surgery, Megan found herself in an unexpected whirlwind. But thanks to the incredible teamwork at Wilkes Medical Center, her dream wedding came true against all odds. With Megan recovering well and plans to renew their vows next summer, Wilkes Medical Center has become a cherished part of their journey. 🌟 “Since we were married there, it holds a special place in our hearts,” Megan shared. It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. Megan and Aidan, your story inspires us every day. Here's to love, resilience, and the amazing teams that make dreams come true, even in the most unexpected places!

  • 🔥 The 1957 Flat Rock Elementary School fire tested North Carolina Baptist Hospital like never before. On February 22, a dozen burn victims arrived at the hospital, revealing the critical need for organized disaster response. Hospital staff scrambled to implement a disaster plan that was still in draft form, demonstrating the importance of preparedness. “It will take only one small group of catastrophe patients to convince any hospital staff of the importance of disaster planning and organization,” the lead doctors noted. The blaze began when hot stage lights ignited curtains, spreading flames rapidly. Most victims found care in Surry County, but the "Flat Rock Six" formed lasting bonds during their lengthy hospital stays at Baptist Hospital. This tragic event led to significant changes: Surry County built a volunteer fire department, and North Carolina revised school fire safety regulations. The hospital's response underscored the need for continuous training and drills, a practice that continues today to ensure readiness for any disaster. Nearly 70 years later, we recognize the importance of an all-hazards approach to disaster planning, ensuring we are prepared for anything from natural disasters to cyberattacks. #100YearsofCaring 🔗 Learn more about this pivotal moment in hospital disaster planning & support our next 100 years: https://bit.ly/4aLmkow 📸: Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives, Publications collection, NC Baptist Hospital Topics

As Mental Health Awareness month comes to a close, let's remember to continue taking care of ourselves and others. I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Steven Scoggin and Gretchen Bayne earlier this month about caring for our mental wellbeing. Take a moment to listen and remember to be kind to yourself. Your mental health matters. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Advocate Health
