I had the great honor of serving as the commencement speaker for Augusta Technical College‘s 2024 commencement ceremony. As a former professor, donning my cap and gown to celebrate the amazing accomplishments of an inspiring group of people reminds me of what I fondly remember as the happiest time of the year. In my speech, I told the graduates of Augusta Tech that they represent the connective tissue of our economy and society because without people with their skills and talents, our economy will be less prosperous and competitive. Further, I noted that, in preparing students to obtain family-supporting jobs that put their education to its highest use, Augusta Tech’s mission aligns with the Atlanta Fed’s strategic priority to build an economy that works for everyone. I also counseled them to remain open to the unexpected throughout their careers and to vote in every election because their voices need to be heard. Finally, I reminded them to pursue their work with passion and flair and know that people will see things in them that they haven’t seen in themselves. Thank you to Augusta Technical College president Dr. Jermaine Whirl for inviting me, and congratulations again to this year’s graduates. Remember: Never walk where a dance will do. Do all you do with joy and flair, and the rest of us will sit back and watch you soar!

During his speech, Bostic reminded the graduates that Augusta Tech’s mission aligns with the Atlanta Fed’s strategic priority to build an economy that works for everyone and urged them each to pursue their work with passion. “Never walk where a dance will do,” Bostic said. “Do all you do with joy and flair, and the rest of us will sit back and watch you soar.
