Special thanks to David Bayne and his family for being one of the first AV Family Members to kick off our membership campaign very early on in December 2023 (before we formally announced our campaign). A plaque dedicated to his mom in honor of his family's first donation hangs in our gallery reminding us of the power of community to realize dreams collectively. We just moved into our new space in Clinton Hill in 2019 and had few resources to install a floor to cover up the ugly cement floor. David and his family responded and donated the attractive floor that adds warmth to our pop up gallery space. Faith and community have given us permission to persevere for 32 years. Are there any visionaries able to join David to reach our May Day call? JOIN & SHARE https://lnkd.in/e2iUn282

It's time to make institution building by leaders of color a thing again! Our communities and young people need the energy of growing up among Black barbers, Black publishers, Black restaurant and gallery owners and theaters. It's on us to create institutions where folks can enjoy services, get their first career opportunity and envision their future. African Voices/Reel Sisters is one of those spaces — we're celebrating 32 years of service. We're also preserving our art, literature and film at Spelman. Become an AV Family Member! I didn’t discover Spelman College, a private liberal arts college in Atlanta and one of the oldest historically black colleges (HBCU), until I had already completed undergraduate school. I was disappointed because I would have loved nothing more than to attend an HBCU. Spelman recently received a donation of $100 million, the largest single donation to an HBCU from billionaires Ronda Stryker and William Johnston, an incredible milestone in the history of the college. If this isn’t a reason to celebrate, I don’t know what is! For the last 15+ years I have worked with African Voices Communications, Inc., a literary magazine devoted to publishing emerging writers and visual artists of color throughout the diaspora, and previously served as festival coordinator for the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival & Lecture Series established under African Voices. African Voices has teamed up with Spelman to archive the magazine’s most precious literature, including organizational records, videos and digitized photographs spanning three decades, as well as provide Spelman with access to 5,000 films written, produced and directed by women of color since 1997 under Reel Sisters, the first Academy Awards qualifying film festival dedicated to providing opportunities to women of color in the film industry. African Voices magazine is launching a matching funds membership drive to preserve our history and archives. Our arts collection will be accessible for future generations in the great halls of Spelman! Become a pioneering AV member and share our campaign with friends and family. Help us match a $100K National Endowment for the Arts - American Rescue Plan grant! Support African Voices Magazine and Spelman Archives https://lnkd.in/ekFjZTkD
