Sudan is facing one of the world’s biggest hunger and displacement crises. According to a new report from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, more than a year of conflict has caused the worst levels of acute food insecurity in Sudan’s history. “The magnitude of this crisis requires a coordinated and sustained response to avoid an even greater humanitarian catastrophe,” said Samy Guessabi, Action Against Hunger’s Sudan Country Director. All of Gaza is now at risk of famine. “Hunger and impediments to humanitarian work are being used as weapons of war in Gaza, as the latest IPC food insecurity analysis shows,” said Natalia Anguera, Head of Middle East Operations at Action Against Hunger. Over 2 million people are facing acute food insecurity, and the hunger crisis is only getting worse. The alarming analysis was released yesterday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee.

Uganda hosts one of the world’s largest populations of refugees. The country is home to over 1.6 million refugees, and nearly 25,000 crossed the border from January through February 2024 alone. Over half (57%) are children. The Kiryandongo District has especially experienced a high volume of incoming refugees, which can put a strain on health care systems. One woman, 21-year-old Sandra, experienced this challenge firsthand when her baby Faith grew ill. Read her story:

Yesterday was #WorldRefugeeDay. There are more refugees in the world than ever before. Displacement in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine drive millions to hunger. Action Against Hunger works closely with refugees to help them rebuild their lives. Here are three stories of many: In Sudan,Nyibol reunites with her husband and eldest daughter after being separated for over a month after a targeted attack in their village in Sudan. Her thoughts on the reunion "I was very excited! Even last night I could not sleep, I was laughing and very happy inside... I could not believe it when I received his phone call after we got separated". In Ukraine, Maksim, 15, lives in a refugee shelter with his grandmother. Maksim witnessed bombings in the park, he now has leg injuries. Maksim wouldn't say it was scary, but he realized how he wanted to live. In Gaza, Raghad, a 19-year-old university student who was displaced says “We are living in a state of non-existence, she says. Raghad once studied at The University College of Applied Science in Gaza. Now she shares a tiny, damp tent with her entire family. "War doesn't have a roadmap,” she said. “You don't know when it will end. Right now, I just want to live abroad, continue my education, my life, my university, my studies, and the dreams and aspirations that I've been deprived of." On #WorldRefugeeDay, there are more refugees in the world than ever before. Displacement in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine drive millions to hunger. In mid-2023, 110 million people worldwide were displaced, and 43.3 million of them --- or 40% --- were children under 18. By now, that number has risen even higher. Action Against Hunger works closely with refugees to help them rebuild their lives. Many of our staff members are refugees themselves. Every day, we work to prevent and treat malnutrition, provide mental health services, improve access to water and sanitation, and support displaced people, wherever they end up. As conflict in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine rages on, our teams face the displacement crisis head-on. Action Against Hunger HEARO https://bit.ly/3xgpLpD

The ongoing civil war in Sudan has devastated the population, and the country is experiencing one of the largest refugee and hunger crises in the world. More than 8.8 million people have fled their homes since April 2023, when the violence broke out. Many families are living in a cycle of displacement, having already left South Sudan and settling in Sudan years prior. Action Against Hunger is working to support returnees as they cross the border back to South Sudan. Along with malnutrition screenings and treatment, our teams direct families to support centers in cities like New Fangak. Learn more about our work ahead of #WorldRefugeeDay: https://bit.ly/4emgzAJ
