I will share that I had this situation occur to me. When you are in the middle of these large scale events, as an emergency manager you need assistants. Not just assistants by title only but individuals that can carry out tasks take command while you recharge. It is a team effort and when this is in place the efforts of the emergency management office are carried out. I learned early on that that balance is important. Personally, it was difficult to find individuals to fill those roles. Eventually I filled those gaps. My advise, have staff assist paid or volunteer!
Just as emergency management requires clear protocols to prevent chaos, setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining your energy levels. Determine what hours you will dedicate to work and when you will disconnect to focus on personal time. Communicate these boundaries to colleagues and family to ensure they are respected. First Responders are known for banging our heads against the wall with little productivity to show for it. Let's make a commitment to ourselves, our families, and yes, our peers to do better. How can you fight a fire, conduct an arrest, or respond to a hurricane if your brain is drained! Eat right. Go for a walk. Read a book. Calm yourself. Ask for HELP!

A colleague of mine once said that there are three balls, which all practitioners have to juggle; the family ball, the personal ball, and the money ball. All of these must be in equal balance with each other and when one drops, this is when trouble begins. Spending days and weeks away on major incidents as a significant struggle for even a seasoned practitioner. What is important to keep in mind is that above all the family is the one to always hold; no matter what!! The family is the core of all energy and gives us all the necessary drive and motivation to keep us going. However, this does not mean that the family ball can be endlessly used and must always be replenished with your personal time.
