People are motivated by the who than the what. It is not *what* they are working on, but *who…* Show them the face of the person who is going to use the product they are working on. Once they understand that they are making something for a *person* the motivation should increase. Telling somebody “good job” is a negative thing, that is you asserting power over them. Show them the face of the customer they are building the product for. Maybe you or them are not working directly on the product; in this case, you have to show the customer’s face to the person directly doing the work. This work-to-person psychology is important for preventing burnout from making work meaningless. Connect the face to add meaning for your co-worker.

In manufacturing operations, it is easier for frontline and mid-level leaders to engage with their team more tactically than strategically. Their success is measured by getting the job done, not by how effective they are in their ability to delegate and empower others to lead key tasks. It is great to assess the current state. It is also great to set clear goals and provide training that improve leadership competencies around delegating.
