How do you maintain meaningful connections after networking events?

The speaker with whom you want to network might be a man of action, most people will show similar interest like you, but how can we stand out from the crowd where this speaker will remember us and show interest in the network? Whenever I attend any event, First I do homework on the topics, when the speaker shares his thoughts, I will make some notes in which I will see if there are any points to suggest. After the event, will introduce myself, and share my experience of how much this session helped me gain more insights on the topic. Advise the speaker that I have a few suggestions to share but I do not want to trouble them more by explaining them here, rather ask them to share with us their email ID to discuss.

Following up promptly and with a personal touch is crucial for maintaining meaningful connections after networking events. Send a personalised email or message within 48 hours to ensure you remain fresh in their memory. This prompt follow-up demonstrates enthusiasm and professionalism. Personalise your message by mentioning something specific from your conversation, such as a topic you discussed, a mutual interest, or a relevant point they made. This shows that you were genuinely interested in what they had to say and sets your message apart from generic follow-ups. Combining timeliness with personalisation not only reinforces the connection but also lays a strong foundation for a potentially beneficial relationship.

The more I learn, the more I know. While drafting emails, I will pen down the info I know about them and what pages/articles I have been following to give them a clear idea of how much of their work we value and how motivated and inspired we feel to read their articles or posts. My emails would be short and with bullet points and to the topic by not deviating from it. I will share a few examples explaining how much we have benefited by following their advice over time. I will note the reason for networking with them to know more about their work and the benefits associated with the mutual partnership for us and society. Add few points in what way their exp can help in my work and in what way my network can help them in their work.

To stay engaged and keep the relationship alive I started by following them on Social media platforms like Facebook, Linkedln, Twitter, etc. Following their company page and keeping a closer look at their posts they do on important subjects. Most of the time, I read their post or over social platforms if I can comment on anything I will describe clearly my statement, or if I have nothing to share I at least like the statement they made and share those valuable points on my social media pages. The pictures they post on social media, I like them or at least comment stating nice pics. This small attempt will keep you in constant touch with your network. They might not write back to you but will keep you in their mind.

To keep the relationship alive after networking events, engage regularly without overwhelming them. Interact with their social media posts by liking, commenting, or sharing relevant content. Invite them to events that might interest them, or occasionally check in with a brief, friendly message. This consistent yet unobtrusive engagement shows your ongoing interest in their professional life and helps maintain a warm connection. Staying engaged through these small, meaningful actions ensures that your relationship remains active and demonstrates that you value their connection beyond the initial meeting.

Something else to consider is to be Genuine. Authenticity fosters trust and respect. Be yourself and avoid being overly formal or transactional. Show genuine interest in the person, not just what they can offer you.
