I have often found it helpful to think of this early iterative process of conceptual sketching to be like getting to know a close friend or starting a relationship. Eventually, you’ll know them quite well. You’ll know how they will react in any given situation, how they will respond and what choices they might make based on outside influences. But first, you have to go through that awkward stage of shared experiences, fact-finding and the “getting to know you period”. In sketching, that’s asking questions of the design by following it’s function, it’s purpose, then personality, and finally add a layer of history to the design. Once you’ve gone through those stages, you have a clearer idea of what this design is all about.
