Contemplate on points like, which features are indispensable to the product?; which design elements will entice different user segments; how can more be delivered in less?; which features can make life simpler and so on.. All this pre- work provides an insight into what are expectations and helps in designing the product.

When consulting with the customer for their needs, often times, the customer can ask for a plethora of features. Divide these into "must haves" and "like to haves" with absolute objectivity. Often times, the added costs of "like to haves" will cause customer to rethink their needs. Then, be absolutely brutal in designing the process. Avoid refining a process that shouldn't exist. Deleting process steps while meeting "must haves" is necessary to reduce costs. Secondly, get as close to raw material sources as possible to avoid excessive markups and keep multiple qualified sources for each RM. Only when you are under the initial cost targets while meeting "must haves", start working on adding "like to have" features.

Try to gather all relevant information and prior knowlegde on the matter...and then sleep on it and let your imagination flow. Keep it simple, try to find robust solution which is easy to reproduce. There is always more than one solution
