Here's how you can ensure the quality and accuracy of your work in Product R&D.

Quality is the ability to provide the same product/service (good or bad) every time over and over. During the designing phase of the product, a feasibility study shall be done, in which you run a reproducibility checks, when you use different samples of raw materials, and let other operator do prepare the product, and that to be redone multiple times. Those different batches of product to be tested, if test results' six sigma falls within the higher and lower quality control limits, then you have an acceptable consistency of a product that would meet or even adjust the customer's expectations.

Make sure that you understood the real goals which has to be set clearly for all members of the team. Discuss them in order to make shure nothing is missed.

In case of reverse engineering, we have to have all data of equivalent product which we are going to develop , market research and the most important the technically strong suppliers and we must know our machine capability to develop desired products.

Pay attention during this phase to the regulatory landscape for your product. You should have an idea of the laws and standards that apply to your product, in all the markets where you plan to sell. There are some international harmonisation of laws and standards - CE marking in Europe, and electro-technical safety via the IECEE's CB scheme certification, for example - but many product areas are governed differently country by country. Without this information, your exciting product concept could hit major barriers at a late stage, wasting time and effort. A little effort in aligning your early design with regulations will save time and money in the long term.

As stated in the comment above check all regulatory needs of your product. Understand the cost involved in completing regulatory testing if required.

Thorough research is essential for getting elegant and cost effective solutions. Sometimes you dont have to invent the wheel again, but to find who did something simmilar before

Make sure you test the same parameters over and over do not adjust after every test. Create projects with detailed protocols. You can have more than one project and each project can have a series of trials with the same protocol.

Find a solution that works. Then, enhance it by removing rough sides and friction points. Look at it again from a distance and polish it where needed. Than close your eyes, open them again and try to look at it as you see it for the first time. Then polish again and soon you will have a diamond.

Think Like Customer While innovating “Think like customer”. Contemplate on points like, which features are indispensable to the product?; which design elements will entice different user segments; how can more be delivered in less?; which features can make life simpler and so on.. All this pre- work provides an insight into what are expectations and helps in designing the product.

In my experience, trial data interpretation is more required to understand the weak area to work upon for continuous improvement till commercialization.

When consulting with the customer for their needs, often times, the customer can ask for a plethora of features. Divide these into "must haves" and "like to haves" with absolute objectivity. Often times, the added costs of "like to haves" will cause customer to rethink their needs. Then, be absolutely brutal in designing the process. Avoid refining a process that shouldn't exist. Deleting process steps while meeting "must haves" is necessary to reduce costs. Secondly, get as close to raw material sources as possible to avoid excessive markups and keep multiple qualified sources for each RM. Only when you are under the initial cost targets while meeting "must haves", start working on adding "like to have" features.

Try to gather all relevant information and prior knowlegde on the matter...and then sleep on it and let your imagination flow. Keep it simple, try to find robust solution which is easy to reproduce. There is always more than one solution
