Active solicitation of feedback is a cornerstone of effective leadership. You should regularly ask for input from peers, superiors, and team members on your leadership style and decision-making. It's crucial to create a safe space where others feel comfortable sharing their honest opinions. When receiving feedback, listen intently without defensiveness, and consider how this information can serve as a catalyst for personal and professional development. Remember, feedback is not just about identifying weaknesses; it's also about recognizing and building upon your strengths.

Leadership requires excellent skills. Also, it is important to know your team very well. One of the ways to know your team is through feedback. Getting feedback from your team is quite key to being a successful leader. Seeking feedback is a strategic way to get to know your team and to know what exactly your team want. However, it is important to sieve such opinions because some of them may be subjective while others may be objective. The ability of a good leader includes the skill to sieve correct feedback from the sentimental feedback.

Step up and actively seek feedback from those around you. This means reaching out to your peers- confidants, team members, and people up the hierarchy beyond your team. Always reach out with open ended questions, providing them with the real estate of a blank canvas to paint their feedback as they want. Remember, feedback is a gift—it's your roadmap to growth. The most important is to be strong enough to be vulnerable with your team by asking for honest and constructive feedback. Being open to this feedback will uncover your areas of growth and make you not only a better leader but a better human being. An amazing mentor of mine (@Cindy) taught me to have sessions called “stop, start, continue”. She warned me to solely listen, that it might hurt but to be unwavering and open. Your direct reports will then tell you things they wish you stopped doing, things they wished you started doing and things they feel you should continue to do. This is the single most valuable advice I ever got.

Enhancing leadership skills involves continuous learning and development. One way is by seeking feedback from peers, subordinates, and mentors to understand strengths and areas for improvement. Engaging in leadership workshops, courses, or reading relevant literature can also provide new insights and techniques. Building strong communication and emotional intelligence skills is crucial for effective leadership, along with fostering a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability within the team. Additionally, practicing empathy, adaptability, and decision-making in various situations helps refine leadership abilities over time.
Once you've gathered feedback, take the time to reflect deeply on what you've heard. Analyze the comments and look for patterns or common themes that might indicate areas where you could improve. Reflection isn't just a passive activity; it's an opportunity to critically assess your leadership practices and identify actionable steps for growth. Consider keeping a leadership journal where you can jot down thoughts, responses to feedback, and set goals for how you plan to address the areas for improvement.

Once you've gathered feedback, don't just skim through it. Sit down and really dig deep into what's been said. Reflect on it deeply and read between the lines. A deep reflection will help you understand not just the what, but more importantly the why, and how you can make changes to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you'd like to be.

Once you've gathered feedback, take the time to reflect deeply on it. Consider the implications of the feedback and how it aligns with your self-perception and your leadership goals. Reflection allows you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself as a leader and how others perceive you.
Setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals based on the feedback you've received is essential for turning insights into action. These goals should focus on enhancing your leadership abilities in tangible ways. For instance, if feedback points to a need for better communication, a SMART goal could be to hold weekly check-in meetings with your team to ensure everyone is on the same page.

With goals in place, it's time to implement changes in your leadership approach. Start small with manageable adjustments to ensure you can sustain these improvements over time.
Evaluating your progress is a critical step in the feedback and evaluation cycle. Periodically review the goals you've set and assess whether the changes you've implemented are yielding the desired outcomes. This evaluation should not just be a self-assessment; seek out feedback from others to get a well-rounded view of your progress. Evaluating your growth not only helps you stay on track but also reinforces the value of the feedback process to your team.

In my experience, connecting team members with team counterparts who do things differently - whether through process, reflection or activity - yields big dividends. I typically set it up with “Bill, I know Jane used to struggle with that same (insert habit or concern here) for a while but found some workarounds. You should reach out to her and connect - she’d be glad to help and we could make it a team lesson you could lead later on (if applicable)”. Of course prep Jane with the background before serving it up. Lost People love to teach and talk about their experiences - use that and build a culture of sharing and learning at the same time. Also helps build team relationships at a deeper level.

Growth | Transformation | Leadership: Inspiring Human-Centric Cultures In Tech
One hard lesson all leaders learn, sadly some later than others is this: Culture is everything in business. Culture cannot be forced, it cannot be presented, it cannot be measured. Culture grows and spreads. Good leaders know that inspiring a culture is essential to create an environment where people can thrive and grow. In business as in sport telling someone to win will not make it happen. Helping them to do the right things, encouraging them to learn and improve, to focus on their performance, sleep and nutrition will help them to win. To be a high performing leader you too need a coach. Our teams are our coaches if we allow ourselves to listen and we allow our teams to coach us. Culture does that. A growth mindset does that.

A culture that promotes feedback in a company brings several benefits. This includes a more transparent and open to communication work environment, where employees feel valued and heard. Regular feedback helps with professional development, identifying areas for improvement and recognizing strengths. This also promotes a climate of trust and collaboration, as well as facilitating problem solving and innovation. In short, a feedback culture contributes to the growth and success of both individuals and the organization as a whole.

Remember feedback is not a “one-and-done”. If you’re going to seek feedback be willing and able to take the time to evaluate the feedback and ask relevant follow-up questions to ensure (as best you can) that you are receiving honest and complete feedback including what you may not want to hear. Ensure those you are requesting feedback from have more than one opportunity to reflect and provide feedback. Sometimes during the first go-round people hold back to see your responses.

This proactive approach not only demonstrates your dedication to growth but also inspires your team by setting a strong example of adaptability and openness in leadership.

Create a safe environment for the team under your leadership. In a safe environment, people tend to deliver their best. Controversy is naturally accepted, there are no winners and losers in the discussion. There is an idea that best suits the circumstances.
