You need to find a sponsor that will champion for you behind closed doors. You must be visible and trustworthy. You must know and manage your professional brand within the organization. Your brand is set within the first year in a team so evaluate where you stand early and often. Communicate clearly what skills and professional objectives you want to accomplish in the next year. Find opportunities within, or if need be outside, the organization to stay on course. Be consistent. Too many professionals let chance dictate where their careers will go. Sometimes staying the course requires hard choices. Be intentional.

You'll be surprised how good employees miss a promotion because leaders 'assume' you might have too much on your plate or are not interested in a promotion or seem to busy with family life for a promotion. Even more if the promotion requires moving to a new city or increased travel time for instance. Leader's dont intent to assume but it just happens to be a default rather than to keep checking or to be reminded to check again with an employee if they wouldn't mind the hassles for a promotion. So advice to employees is to always let your leaders know about your aspirations and advice to leaders is to always check and check again with employees rather than assume.
