I'd like to offer an alternate view. I don't mean to discount the value of learning about marketing, but many gifted brand strategists have came out of completely different fields. By all means, learn the fundamentals of marketing, but you may be equally well-served studying Anthropology, English, Art. Branding is a field that is both art and science. We are in a very metrics-minded phase right now, but branding is not a paint-by-numbers skill. Brand strategists are systems thinkers and lateral thinkers and critical thinkers. And you need a feel for aesthetics (which in my experience is not taught well at all in marketing courses). Learn how to really think - and have broad interests that allow you to connect dots in interesting ways.

In other words, focus on gaining the basic skill sets you can apply tactically in your work. To be an effective brand strategist, you must understand what motivates people (psychology). You need to know how to create objectives, analyze consumers, and target consumers (marketing). You also need to understand how to communicate with customers in a way that's meaningful for them (copywriting). There are many disciplines to learn to be an effective strategist. Those three are fundamental and worth pursuing in a formal education.

You won't be an effective brand strategist without experience. Formal education can teach you related disciplines. Books can give you the basics. But you won't know how to put it together without experience. You need to learn from someone who's done it effectively before. Otherwise, you're going to waste time making a lot of mistakes. So, when looking for an entry-level position or internship, you should focus on finding a place with someone who will be an effective mentor. And don't jump the gun to try to build your portfolio right away. That shouldn't be your primary goal right away. Gaining experience through a mentor should be the primary goal. A portfolio, a secondary goal. Effective experience really counts early on.

There are also great resources through YouTube or courses on sites like Udemy with a wealth of information as well as hands-on exercises to further build upon. I would not strive away from even finding brands you enjoy and reimagining the brand (both strategy and development.)
