What do you do if your colleagues in the Search Engine Optimization field are undermining your ideas?
In the dynamic world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), having your ideas undermined by colleagues can be disheartening. SEO is the practice of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by enhancing the visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine. When you're passionate about your SEO strategies and believe they can make a difference, it's crucial to handle such situations with tact and professionalism. It's about finding the balance between standing your ground and remaining open to collaboration and feedback.
When your ideas are not taken seriously in SEO discussions, take a step back and assess the situation objectively. Consider whether there's a misunderstanding or if your ideas are indeed being undermined. Reflect on the presentation of your ideas and the evidence you've provided to support them. Sometimes, a different approach or additional data can make all the difference in how your colleagues perceive your suggestions.

Are your colleagues intentionally trying to undermine you or do they simply have different perspectives? Consider if their behavior stems from a genuine belief your ideas are flawed or insecurity about their own positions. Have you presented your ideas clearly & concisely? Did you back them up with data or evidence to support their effectiveness? Sometimes, refining your presentation style can make a difference. Don't be afraid to have an open conversation with your colleagues. Ask clarifying questions to understand their concerns & perspectives. This can foster a collaborative environment. Reframe your ideas to highlight the potential benefits for the project. Emphasize how your approach can contribute to achieving shared goals.

In SEO discussions, if your ideas face resistance, assess objectively. Reflect on presentation and evidence provided. Different approaches or additional data may clarify and garner support for your suggestions.
Clear communication is essential when addressing concerns about your SEO ideas being undervalued. Approach your colleagues with a calm demeanor and express your feelings without placing blame. Discuss the merits of your strategies and ask for specific feedback. This can often lead to constructive conversations that not only resolve conflicts but also enhance the overall SEO strategy.
To prevent your SEO ideas from being sidelined, it's beneficial to build support among your peers. Share your thoughts with colleagues individually before bringing them to a larger group. This can help you refine your approach and gather allies who understand and believe in your vision. A network of support within your team can be a powerful force in ensuring your ideas are given due consideration.
Staying informed about the latest SEO trends and techniques is crucial when defending your ideas. Your colleagues are more likely to take you seriously if you back up your strategies with current industry knowledge. Attend webinars, read blogs, and participate in forums to keep your skills sharp. This continuous learning shows your dedication to the field and can bolster your credibility among peers.
Nothing speaks louder than results in the world of SEO. If you're confident in your ideas, consider implementing them on a small scale or in a controlled environment. Track the performance and present the data to your colleagues. Demonstrating tangible success can be a compelling argument for the efficacy of your strategies and may sway skeptics to your side.
Maintaining a positive attitude is key when navigating workplace dynamics in SEO. Don't let setbacks discourage you from sharing your ideas in the future. Instead, use them as learning opportunities to refine your approach and improve your communication skills. Positivity can be infectious, and a constructive outlook may encourage your colleagues to be more receptive to your contributions.

From my experience at Inoriseo, one effective strategy is to leverage data storytelling. When presenting your SEO ideas, frame them within a narrative that clearly links your strategies to business goals and user outcomes. Use visuals like charts and graphs to make your data more compelling. Additionally, consider setting up regular knowledge-sharing sessions where team members can present recent findings or successful case studies. This fosters a collaborative environment and allows everyone to see the tangible impact of different SEO approaches, potentially reducing resistance to new ideas.

Undermining your ideas/skills doesn't just come from colleagues. There are SEOs out there who will write directly to your clients to try to convince them that what you're doing for SEO is sub-par. I always remind my clients that when this happens - how can someone who has never spoken to you, and doesn't know your business goals be critical of any digital marketing strategy. Most clients will ignore 99% these spammers. But if there's one who is particularly aggressive, then get them on the phone. I'll bet 100% of them can't go toe-to-toe with you because they don't know your client - and you do. This usually shuts them down. Most of the time I ignore them, but tactics like theirs give reputable SEOs a bad rep and they need a reality check.
