Securing a raise is very difficult in this economy. Even if you “know your value,” and are doing a fantastic job, some companies just won’t budge or they can’t or they won’t make the effort . You could make the case for a spot bonus, if you can prove you went “above and beyond” on a certain project. You can also try to negotiate an extra day or two of PTO. However, I encourage you to fight for a higher salary when you first accept and start a new job. I’ve made the mistake of not doing that, thinking I should prove my worth first. Don’t do that - it’s essential to negotiate your starting salary for what you think you’re worth!

In my experience, building authentic diverse relationships with the intention of collaborative work, will position an organization to effectively expand community outreach efforts and effectively reach a larger audience.

My rule of thumb is, you have to believe in yourself first, before you expect anyone else to believe in you. If you don’t deserve you’re worthy, you can’t expect others to believe you are. Know your worth, & know your value. With that in mind, always research/track your progress, accomplishments, & R.O.I. data (if it applies.) When seeking an increase, be ready to present the following: • What kind of skills & experience do you bring to the table? • How have you enhanced systems? • How have you saved the company money? • How have you grown profits for the company? • How do you work with your peers, clients, leaderships, and consumers? • How’s your attitude & willingness to go above & beyond your typical call of duty?

If you don’t already have a clear understanding of your role, responsibilities, & expectations, sit down with your supervisor & ask. You can’t set goals without clearly understanding what is expected from you. Crystal clear communication is where goal setting starts. When you start to set your goals, a few things to keep in mind are: • Are your goals realistic? • What is your plan to accomplish your goals? • Do you have the necessary time & resources to achieve your goals? • Have you shared your goals with your supervisor? Are you all on the same page? Make sure you always track your goals, your progress, and make sure you provide updates.

Establecer objetivos y metas claras en relación a la acción comunitaria, es pensar en la expansión de programas educativos a nuevas comunidades rurales y urbanas desfavorecidas, incrementando el numero de voluntarios comprometidos y activos en las iniciativas de la organización; para ello, es necesario adquirir fondos para apoyar las metas que guiarán al plan de acción comunitario que se pretende desarrollar.

Me ha resultado útil diferenciar entre un objetivo y una meta. El objetivo mide cualidades que deseo alcanzar; y, la meta me permite definir la cantidad que deseo. Por supuesto que ambos elementos son necesarios para determinar hacia donde debo enfocar los esfuerzos del equipo. Aunque pueden ser a largo plazo, funciona mucha tener claros los objetivos y metas a corto plazo. Así, cada acción o actividad puede tener efectividad.

I think setting goals is very important to enable you to go forward. It can be as simple as a pad and pencil or as sophisticated as a whiteboard. Make this your daily, first thing in the morning, effort. Don't allow other less important things get in the way of your 'goals sheet' -- stay the course. Make an ally in the workplace particularly if that someone is in a field or job you are interested in.

As a professional, I know that I am in charge of my learning and seeking out development. I made a habit of seeking out coffee dates or informational interviews with leaders that I wanted to learn more from, attended their public speaking events, learned their best skills and worked daily to develop those skills. This also helped others see my commitment to myself and the organization

Don't talk, people love talking about themselves -- listen. Seek out additional training by the experts online or by paying for another course of instruction on your subject of interest --it will be worth it in the end.

In general, you should always keep a detailed record of your achievements! It’s a lifesaver when you forget everything you’ve accomplished and serves as a solid reminder of why you deserve that raise. Keeping track of your wins makes it easier to showcase your value when it’s time to talk about boosting your paycheck.

Data analytics and documentation of your work production, and successes is critical. I often used a time utilization tool to document my activities and where I was spending my time to keep on top of priorities and producing positive outcomes.

I was encouraged in my first job to always keep a "ME" folder of my accomplishments and things I wished I had done better. Having the examples at my fingertips saves time and energy when achievements need to be quantified. Being able to identify and track goals brings attention to the smallest of details people tend to not think about. Numbers do not lie!

Here are a a few things you can do when it’s time to talk about an increase: • Be prepared for the conversation. • Communicate with facts, not emotions. • Create a 3-6 page presentation with bullet points to guide you. • Know what you want/need, and also know what your bottom line is. SIDE NOTE: I had an employee ask me for a raise years ago & they were seeking an increase between $3,000-$10,000. Well that’s a broad range. You have to do the math, and be reasonable with your ask. A $3,000 increase equates to an extra: • $250 p/month • $58 p/ week • $1.44 p/ hour A $10,000 increase equates to: • $833 p/month • $192 p/week • $4.81 p/ hour Again, know what you want & clearly communicate it.

It may also be important to directly ask or find a way to learn the specific skills, projects and steps you need to take to get a raise. You could be doing a lot of great things well but you need to make sure you’re doing the right things well, at the right time and with consistency. Making a plan to get a raise by working harder or doing more than is needed can be exhausting so it’s extremely important that you are clear about which things will actually contribute to helping you get the type of recognition that aligns with getting a raise rather than just a pat on the back.
