Assertiveness in Product R&D begins with clear goal-setting. You must articulate what you aim to achieve with your product, breaking down complex objectives into manageable tasks. When challenges arise, as they inevitably will, having well-defined goals allows you to remain focused and make decisions that align with your product vision. This clarity enables you to assertively defend your project's direction and priorities when negotiating resources or when faced with competing interests.

🔍 Recently, during a kitchen cabinet project, we encountered a significant challenge in sourcing sustainable materials within our budget constraints. Rather than accepting defeat, I took an assertive approach by researching alternative suppliers and negotiating favorable terms. 🤝 I reached out to various material vendors, explaining our requirements and the importance of sustainability in our design ethos. Through assertive communication and persistence, I secured partnerships with suppliers offering eco-friendly options at competitive prices.

Innovation and selling are the key to any business. A success of product is defined by its acceptance by end consumer, therefore a "being close to customer and sticking to the basics" is one of the most successful approach of Design function. Most of company's R&D function have missing link with their real Consumer segment which is the critical meed for defining product specification as the first step. Then comes the other steps involved in product development which can efficiently be managed through strong toll gate system of new product development. After product specification and product design the design simulation is another critical step which helps us ensuring first time right quality & helps in optimizing development cost.

Effective Communication is the key for the product development. Several teams are working over that particular project . There is need to have the effective communication not just within the single but also among the cross functional teams as well. Have clear communication with the vendors/manufacturers to get the lead time for the parts .The same should be conveyed to the product managers to get their job done as per the R&D inputs.

Before starting the project ,customers started to place their orders. This is because of the brand name and the trust that the company has earned. So before starting the project itself it is very important to estimate the timeline for the project and budget. If you can’t commit by that time then customer will lose trust over your brand and this will give a chance to the competitors to gain your customer trust. So it is utmost necessary to manage your goal within the stimulated time frame and budget.

Keep it real with your team and stakeholders about what can be achieved and by when. This involves clear communication and sometimes a bit of tough love. I'm not seeing the connection between product R&D and the need for any "assertiveness". Each of the items offered as advice would be helpful and should be included in any R&D programme. In the context of a creative, collaborative, open and transparent product development process I would have thought overt assertiveness might be counter productive. You want to take the people on the journey with you?... Encourage the use of the carrot...not the stick. Sell the sizzle...but make sure there is a sausage.

I'm guessing there maybe many different ways of understanding the meaning of "assertiveness". Assertiveness as an expression of confidence is one thing... Assertiveness as any kind of coercion or intimidation is quite another. I agree ensuring activities remain on track and on budget is essential for coherent and cohesion project management. This undoubtedly requires a degree of confidence to ensure all involved remain on task and work together. It could be counterproductive to confuse the two.
