A sales internship is an essential step in discovering if you have the right mindset to advance your career in sales. My own sales journey began in 2001, when I started telephone selling cruise packages and other outbound tours. During this three-month internship, I developed the resilience to handle challenging prospects and learned a critical sales fundamental: know your product or service inside and out before making any calls. This experience also instilled in me a "roll up your sleeves" attitude, ready to tackle any situation that arises.

Throughout your internship, continually evaluate your progress and set personal goals. Seek regular feedback from your supervisor and be open to constructive criticism. Use this feedback to improve your sales techniques and interpersonal skills. Reflect on the experiences that you found most challenging and rewarding, and consider how they have contributed to your growth as a sales professional. This self-assessment will help you understand where your strengths lie and what areas you need to focus on as you move forward in your career.

-
Always welcome any feedback provided by your supervisor. Always remember that in sales, an account works as a team and everyone 's effort is connected to the rest of the team. Discuss your personal goals with someone more experienced, aiming either too high or too low, will not help you evaluate your progress.

I personally don’t think internships are necessary in sales. Having been a top producer, later training others who were wildly successful, internships aren’t the answer. Practicing the sales pitch with teammates in a classroom setting is an opportunity to help critique what they did well, and items they need to improve. It also helps others gain insight and improve their own skills and within a week or two, though still a bit nervous, most do well. Internships not only take longer, but can take quality time away from the person helping coach. We’re not diffusing a bomb, we’re building the confidence, which is 90% of what separates the good from the bad.
