Developing strong analytical skills is essential for dissecting complex HR issues. By being able to break down a problem into its components, you can identify underlying causes and potential impacts on the organization. One of the most critical aspects to be effective at problem solving, is our ability to understand the problem clearly, and accurately. It is an often-overlooked aspect, as most professionals jump to solutioning mid-way. Take time to define the problem statement in your own words, understand the implications of the problem and the benefits that the desired outcome should yield. Analyse data, and leverage any other information sources, connect with stakeholders to collect more information. Collaborate and be open to ideas, you don't have to be the smartest person in the team. You can accomplish more by being a good listener and an observer. Explore and propose the simplest solution to the problem and not the fanciest one.

My mission is to support HR professionals' continual learning and to become experts in the field.
I remember working with a 1st time supervisor who already had a solution in mind for his problem. He just asked me if he could do it (eg. would it be a policy violation). But before we get to the solution, we need to understand the problem we're trying solve. I asked him a lot of questions. Ask questions, be curious, understand the business, HR issues & problems that management & employees are faced with, & the goals we're trying to achieve. My answer to him, was no. After understanding the problems, issues, & goals, I proposed a much better solution that was still in compliance. We implemented it without any issues. Sometimes the pathway is incorrect, but the goal or result you're trying to achieve is positive, so you need another pathway.
