Based on my experience, Adobe Premiere Pro is excellent for comprehensive audio editing, especially with its seamless integration with Adobe Audition. Although I haven't used Avid Media Composer, it's highly regarded in the film industry for its precise control and flexibility. Both are top choices for professional-quality audio editing tools.

When it comes to precision audio editing, any program that can edit to the sample level is useful. However, the question should be: Which NLE is powerful enough for professional audio editing but easy enough for video editors? I don't know if there is a clear answer. Adobe has excellent tools for editing audio in Premiere Pro, but more advanced tools are available in Audition. Davinci Resolve also has excellent tools on the edit page but very advanced tools on the Fairlight page - the same is true for AVID Media Composer with ProTools. It always comes down to which NLE works for you (personally). Try them all and decide which one fits your workflow best.
Multitrack editing is a must-have feature in professional video editing software, allowing you to layer multiple audio tracks and adjust them independently. This functionality enables you to create complex soundscapes and mix different elements like voiceovers, background music, and sound effects with ease. Look for software that offers an intuitive multitrack timeline, where you can visually organize and edit your audio components. The capability to solo or mute individual tracks helps in focusing on specific elements during the editing process.

Video-focused multitrack editing is best done with purpose-built applications. Tools like Davinci Fairlight, Adobe Audition, AVID ProTools, Steinberg Nuendo, and Vegas Studio Pro are all worth considering.
The inclusion of a comprehensive suite of audio effects is what separates good video editing software from great ones. You should have access to a library of effects that can enhance your audio, such as equalization (EQ), reverb, and compression. These effects can correct issues in your audio or creatively alter sounds to fit the mood of your video. Additionally, the ability to keyframe audio effects allows for dynamic changes over time, adding depth and movement to your sound.

Dealing with unwanted noise is a common challenge in video production. Professional video editing software should offer advanced noise reduction tools to clean up your audio. These tools can remove hiss, hum, wind, and other background noises that may distract from the main audio content. Effective noise reduction can be the difference between amateurish and professional-sounding audio, making it a critical feature for your editing toolkit.

By using the premiere pro you can also close up the noises that are in the video or in the audio so you don't have to look for other software's as an option.
As video content becomes more immersive, surround sound support is increasingly important for professionals. Software that provides comprehensive audio editing tools should include the ability to edit and mix audio for surround sound formats. This feature allows you to place audio elements in a three-dimensional space, creating a more engaging and realistic sound experience for your audience. Whether you're producing content for cinema, television, or virtual reality, surround sound capabilities are essential.

Mixing for surround sound is a specialized skill that requires specialized equipment and a suitable mixing environment. It's best to hire an experienced mixer for this kind of work. If you're interested in developing this skill, be prepared to spend a fair amount of money on equipment and (possibly) interior construction. The choice of NLE is the easy part. :-)
For complex audio editing tasks, automation and control features are invaluable. The software you choose should allow you to automate volume levels, panning, and effects over time. This means you can create smooth transitions and changes without manually adjusting settings for each frame. Additionally, support for external hardware control surfaces can speed up your workflow by providing tactile control over software functions, making it easier to fine-tune your audio to perfection.
