We have to separate 2 different approach and technologies. You can inspect traffic based on IP header and payload, so called Deep Packet Inspection. This is very resource demanding but you will get the true packet info what you can analyse with any Wireshark compatible tool. You have to mirror the traffic to the DPI device. The other one is the Netflow export and collection. This is less intrusive but requires Netflow support from the network devices. Suggestion: - if you need basic metrics only, go for Netflow collection. - if you need to check the payload (or Netflow export not supported), go for DPI. You can check eg. : RVBD SteelCentral AppResponse / Netprofiler combo with Packet Analyzer Plus.
