The first step to becoming a social worker is to obtain a relevant degree from an accredited program. Depending on your level of education and career goals, you can pursue a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in social work. Each degree has different requirements and opportunities for specialization and practice. You can also choose to pursue a dual degree in social work and another field, such as public health, law, or education.
To practice as a social worker, you will also need to obtain a license from the state where you work. Licensing requirements vary by state, but they usually involve completing a certain number of supervised hours, passing an exam, and adhering to ethical and professional standards. You can find more information about licensing requirements and procedures on the Association of Social Work Boards website.
Another important resource for beginning a career in social work is networking and mentoring. Networking can help you connect with other professionals, learn from their experiences, and find opportunities for collaboration and employment. You can network through various channels, such as attending conferences, joining professional associations, participating in online forums, and reaching out to alumni or colleagues.
Mentoring can provide you with guidance, support, and feedback from someone who has more experience and knowledge in the field. A mentor can help you develop your skills, identify your strengths and areas of improvement, and navigate the challenges and opportunities of the profession. You can find a mentor through formal programs, such as the National Association of Social Workers Mentor Match, or through informal relationships, such as with a professor, supervisor, or coworker.
As a social worker, you will need to keep learning and growing throughout your career. Continuing education and professional development are essential resources for staying updated on the latest research, trends, and best practices in the field. They can also help you enhance your skills, expand your knowledge, and advance your career.
There are many ways to access continuing education and professional development resources, such as taking online courses, attending webinars, reading journals and books, and joining workshops and seminars. You can also earn continuing education credits to maintain your license and certification. Some of the organizations that offer continuing education and professional development opportunities for social workers are the Council on Social Work Education, the Society for Social Work and Research, and the Social Work Online CE Institute.

3. Continuing Education and Professional Development - I've always found continuing education fascinating from the time I worked at the Johannesburg Child Welfare Society. Most of my colleagues at the NGO weren't keen to attend in-service training, but I cherished the opportunity to learn and grow. Colleagues told me they were too absorbed with their heavy caseloads and writing statutory reports to give their full attention to the in-service training offered by the NGO. My mini-thesis for my Honours degree at Wits was on the topic of in-service training and the educational side of social work practice has always been one of my passions. I have attended talks, conferences and case discussions, but also given CPD workshops for my peers.
