What do you do if you're a mid-career game designer looking to boost your leadership skills?
As a mid-career game designer, you're likely at a point where you have solid experience in creating engaging game experiences. However, if you're looking to transition into a leadership role or enhance your current leadership skills, there are several steps you can take to make that leap. The journey to becoming a leader in game design involves not only refining your existing skills but also developing new competencies that enable you to guide teams and projects to success.
Seeking mentorship is a powerful way to enhance your leadership skills. A mentor with extensive experience in game design leadership can offer you personalized advice, share their experiences, and provide guidance on handling complex project management and team dynamics. This one-on-one relationship allows for a tailored approach to your professional development, giving you insights into effective communication, decision-making, and strategy that are vital for a leadership role.

Working one on one with a mentor is invaluable experience, especially if you want to mimic their leadership style. Before approaching a mentor write a short brief for yourself and then on what you hope to learn from them. Make sure you have regular checkins and goals in mind when you discuss the possibility of becoming someone’s mentee. Creating an organised and thought out plan for success is a sign of a good leader.

If you can find a mentor: absolutely, this is invaluable. Or, I would say "I can imagine this would be invaluable", since I personally never managed to get one - and I know I'm not alone. Your best alternative is to try to build a network of people you can talk to, ask questions, reflect with and learn from: go to events, reach out (both at said events and places like LinkedIn) and build those relationships. It will help you learn and grow while also helping you connect with your peers.
Continuously expanding your knowledge base is crucial for leadership. This can involve learning about new game design methodologies, project management techniques, or even the psychology of leadership. By broadening your understanding of various aspects of game design and team management, you equip yourself with the tools needed to lead effectively. Consider taking advanced courses or certifications that specifically target areas you want to improve in.

In game design, there's always more to learn: every new game has something to teach you, each failure and success has points to take away. Examine and reflect on games, on their construction and mechanics. What do they do well? Where do you feel they fall short? What do players seem to dislike or enjoy? What would you do differently? You can read, listen to podcasts, watch videos, attend conferences, etc - and these are all excellent! But don't overlook the fact that you can learn a lot both by playing games, and by seeing how others feel about the games they play.
Take the initiative to lead projects within your current role. This hands-on experience is invaluable for developing leadership skills. By managing a project from conception to completion, you'll gain insight into team coordination, resource allocation, and deadline management. This practical application of leadership will also showcase your capabilities to your peers and superiors, helping you stand out as a candidate for future leadership positions.
Networking is essential in the game industry. Attend industry conferences, join professional organizations, and engage in online communities where you can connect with other professionals. Through networking, you'll not only stay abreast of the latest trends but also build relationships that can lead to collaborative opportunities, mentorships, and even job offers. Remember, leadership is as much about who you know as what you know.
Developing a strong personal brand can set you apart as a leader in game design. Your personal brand is the unique combination of skills and experiences that define your professional identity. By actively shaping how you're perceived—through speaking engagements, a professional blog, or social media—you can establish yourself as a thought leader and go-to expert in your field.
Finally, don't underestimate the importance of soft skills such as communication, empathy, and teamwork. These skills are often what differentiate a good leader from a great one. Engage in activities that challenge you to work collaboratively, resolve conflicts, and inspire others. Whether it's through team sports, volunteer work, or collaborative side projects, these experiences will hone the interpersonal skills vital for effective leadership.

Take some time to research and think about the kind of leader you want to be. Pay attention to other leaders in meetings, note their leadership style and decide where you align. Do a self-assessment, but be honest with yourself, decide what your best leadership qualities and soft skills are, but be open to improving on the ones you find lacking. A good leader knows what skills they need to improve upon.
