I particularly found building my portfolio hard as I didn't engage in any freelance gigs prior. The best way I found helpful was to collaborate with other experts in the field by facilitating a portion of their work while their present. Another great way is to seek new clients and offering your services as a demo (I would avoid saying "Free" as it might undermine your competency). Once you get few demos, that should set you up to structure your approach and maybe polish your presence. Now go get it! I am a firm believer, there is a market for every skill we possess, if you are not killing it today, your spot is yet to be discovered, just keep on building, nurturing your skills when the time comes you have nothing to stop you.
