In my experience, people with high emotional intelligence can be recognised by how people interact with them. Generally, high EI individuals attract people to them, simply because they take the time to understand people on a 1-1 basis. In the same way, some one with a lot of yes people around them can be deemed to have low EI, because they think people are around them because they are respected, but instead it’s usually due to fear. Overall, observing those around individuals will tell you all you need to know about an individuals EI.
Active listening is a critical component of emotional intelligence. By carefully listening to what someone is saying—and how they're saying it—you can gauge their ability to empathize and understand others' perspectives. Notice if they are fully engaged in conversations, if they ask insightful questions, and whether they can accurately paraphrase others' points of view, demonstrating that they've truly grasped the essence of the dialogue.
