I have personally seen A/B split tests though at the surface level one may have a higher CTR (Click Through Rate) perform better but when looking at the data on the back-end CRM system, the lower click-through rate ad actually produced more conversions. The important distinction here is to always look at the FULL FUNNEL conversion not just vanity metrics on the ad campaign itself. Pro Tip: ALWAYS be sure to test ALL links before launching/ going live. Things can break down (redirects, custom redirects, URL stripping due to privacy settings, latest IOS updates, etc.) I have seen it all in the Digital Marketing trenches.

In SEM A/B testing is known as split testing. To run an A/B test on Facebook or an Experiment in Google ads, we create two different versions of one piece of content, with a single variable. An experiment is Performed to optimize for better results and find areas for improvement. 1- Decide the goal/objective you want to measure or improve. e.g. Cost/Conversion or Conversion Rate. 2- Use only one variation in split testing. e.g. Landing page, Audience or Keyword match type etc. Testing more than one variation is not recommended. 3- Use the same budget in the experiment or test that you are spending on the original campaign. 4- Allow the test to run for a sufficient time. At least 10 to 15 days, before deciding the winner.
Next, you need to establish a baseline and a target for your success metrics. The baseline is the current or average value of your metric before testing, and the target is the desired or expected value after testing. For example, if your goal is to increase the conversion rate of your landing page, you may have a baseline of 10% and a target of 15%. These values will help you determine the size and duration of your test and the statistical significance of your results.

The number of events or audiences divided into the control group and variation should be sufficient to obtain statistically significant data. Often, it is possible to do without predefined target indicators. Any improvement identified within an A/B test that has collected a sufficient amount of data to be statistically significant can already be applied in the future for a broader test. This is certainly possible if the test has shown uplift. The multitude of even small metric improvements proven by testing contribute to outstanding results and business metric growth.

Analyze what your CVR has been over the last quarter. Use that as a baseline. Then set a goal based on that. Looking at industry benchmarks is nice, but that's not your business. If you're historically converting at 5% but the industry is 2% -- are you just going to call it a day? And if it's much higher, it may not be feasible to get there in 1 experiment. Positive, compounding, growth is what I prefer to aim for.

I find it useful to consider the buyer cycle when selecting your data sample. If we want to increase our conversion rates, and it usually takes our customers 6 months from initial point of contact to conversion (purchase made or deal closed) then use at least 6 months worth of sample data. 6,9 or 12 months. Any further back from then often means changes have been made (in processes, website, products/ services etc) to the customers experience that it means this data isn't as relevant anymore. Then you can use the averages as your base data. Eg. I want to educate visitors around a new service, I would find base figures for page views, time on page, bounce rate, session duration, scroll tracking & conversion (book a meeting).
