We have training for everything else: active shooter, mental health, fire drills, hurricane, bomb, and the list goes on. We receive these trainings monthly to teach us how to deal with situations that may arise that threaten us. In this increasingly dangerous digital landscape we need trainings that help us stay protected from digital threats to our safety. These are required trainings that we provide feedback on, actively engage with, and discuss. Digital incident response and cybersecurity roundtables are something that should be something added to the list of trainings we undergo as students for our safety.

Cyber safety is a multifaceted issue involving three key factors: awareness, tools, and monitoring. The increased use of smart mobile devices among school students in the pre-COVID era significantly destabilized cybersecurity measures in schools. Children and young adults are naturally curious and eager to explore. Controls often prove ineffective as they are resourceful enough to find ways around them. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a continuous awareness program that addresses the rapidly evolving threat landscape. Adopting tools to prevent vulnerabilities and implementing monitoring to track effectiveness and enable corrective actions.
-
When developing a cyber safety program for your school, it's important to consider the evolving nature of cyber threats. Regularly updating your policies, training materials, and incident response plans to address new threats and technologies will help keep your school's cyber safety practices effective. Additionally, fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration among all stakeholders can enhance your school's ability to respond to and mitigate cyber threats.

Encouraging a culture of cyber safety in schools is crucial in today's digital age. Here are some important steps to consider: 1. Education and Training: Provide comprehensive training to students, teachers, and staff about the importance of cyber safety, including topics such as strong password creation, recognizing phishing attempts, and safe internet browsing habits. 2. Implement Clear Policies: Establish clear and concise policies regarding acceptable technology use, online behavior, and consequences for violating these policies. Ensure that these policies are communicated effectively to all members of the school community. 3. Cybersecurity Tools: Invest in robust cybersecurity tools such as firewalls, antivirus software.
-
Another point to consider is starting early in encouraging a culture of cybersecurity. I had the privilege of serving as a Scout Master for a local Boy Scout Troop. One requirement from the National BSA leadership council that I was really glad to see was the inclusion of the Cyber Chip requirement, which is currently morphing into Digital Safety. This requirement simply gives exposure to basic 'good safety practices' around using digital devices in a connected world and exposes youth to a questioning attitude when it comes to online interactions.
-
Understand the law. Do not take it upon yourself to pentest your school's network without their explicit, written permission and supervision.
-
All of these suggestions are made for an ideal environment where kids care and want to be involved in defending against emerging threats. We have to create importance and help them recognize the threat that exists and what they can do to protect themselves and the resources they use.
