Beyond a simple "ok" or "not ok" judgement, vision systems can be employed to collect detailed data on the slightest variations and trends in the work in progress or finished products. This data can then be used to counter developing issues upstream before they lead to quality issues and furthermore the collected data can also be used to later on prove quality to customers, regulating bodies or similar.
-
This is one that's often overlooked. Your vision system can evaluate each part to see if it's acceptable, but it can also record that data and enable you to do things like trend analysis where you can identify failure patterns that you normally would not be able to see. Or for traceability - lot numbers for recalls or warranty handling, for example.

There are vision systems, imaging systems, and imaging sensors. Within these categories, there are numerous types, including Machine Vision, Computer Vision, Thermal Vision, 3D Vision, Co-Axial Imaging, Hyper spectral Imaging etc. Therefore, it's important to first understand the problem you are looking to solve, i.e., defect detection. Then, break down defect detection into its constituent parts required for manual detection. This is important because you don't want to overburden vision or imaging systems if a specific type of defect can be more efficiently detected using another method, i.e., metal detectors, sound, weight, etc. Splitting defect detection in this way improves the accuracy of vision or imaging systems.
