Staying current needs to be perceived as "part of our job" and not "on top of our job." In theory, this sounds clear, but in practice, this requires effort and prioritization. Just block time for this. 2. We all know the value of "learning from others" and "learning on the job", but it can be a reflex to prioritize (external) training over engaging in a gig or an HR Community of Practice. Just try to apply the 70-20-10 rule and mix various ways of staying current. I know it's not easy, but let's try to lead by example in HR and foster a culture of continuous learning and staying current :)

Its important to question and understand why some decisions are taken and under which situations? What is the logic in taking approach A vs approach B? How are various sub-functions related? How an action in one sub-function impacts other areas? Curiosity helps in understanding the functional nuances and ability to think holistically and thereby gaining confidence and producing better results. Reading journals/case studies, attending conferences and asking questions to the team members help in this quest.

Mostly this is prompted when a company faces litigation and realises the need of a HR professional to manage employees. Due to ignorance, a had no systems nor structures.The new HR has to have a footing; Some aspects are critical like; 1) Compliance of legal and statutory requirements 2) Starting the HR office and a filing system 3) Creating HR Policies and handbook 4) Training employees 5) Joining an alliance in that field which will assist in polishing her work. 6) Having staff welfare programs. 7)Team building activities. 8) Be a change manager.

Having basic understanding of various domains within HR is a foundational step, however, one needs to have hunger for learning. Learning from various courses, learning from self experiences and learning from seniors who are having established careers in HR. one of the important yet underestimated skills to develop since the inception of your HR career could be to be non judgemental and to overcome biases as much as possible.
