Building rapport is the cornerstone of effective business networking. It's about creating a connection that goes beyond transactional interactions. To do this, show genuine interest in the people you meet. Ask about their projects, listen actively, and offer insights or assistance without expecting immediate reciprocation. This approach demonstrates confidence in your value to others and fosters relationships that can elevate your professional standing.
-
Influence is a versatile term, but 'professional' adds a refined touch. Throughout my decade-long tenure as a company owner, it was a core principle never to engage in sales tactics. Similarly, as a father for twice as long, I've learned firsthand that direct commands seldom yield positive results. When considering the concepts of 'told' and 'sold,' it becomes evident that persuasion is the only viable option. Drawing inspiration from Ted Lasso, whose mantra of 'believe' underscores the importance of confidence, I've come to understand the power of influence is essential to success. If you refine your skills & fortify your resolve, confidence naturally blossoms, self-belief flourishes, and connections with like-minded individuals deepen.
-
To excel in professional interactions, engage authentically by being genuine and attentive in conversations. Leverage body language to convey confidence and sincerity. Commit to continuous learning about yourself and others.
-
By combining confidence with rapport-building skills, you can significantly enhance your professional influence. Confidence helps you assert yourself effectively, while rapport allows you to connect with others on a deeper level, building trust and collaboration
-
I come across such incidents frequently. People approach me for their products/services without any earlier interaction. It's a completely wrong process. You must prioritise building rapport before offering your products or services. Trying to know the person, listening to him/her with empathy, finding out his/her areas of interests, accomplishments, etc are few of the crucial steps. When you build a rapport by building a deeper connection sharing any idea, and taking opinion becomes easy.

I attend many BNi meetings as the Sr Support Director for BNi - Pune East & North regions, India. During every BNi meet 2 business owners present there business in 7 minutes. Both are introduced in a certain format before their presentations. One of the points in introduction is their "Interests". It could be movies, cricket, treckking or anything. I have created many "whatsapp broadcasts" for people with specific interests. For example, the moment I come across an article in newspaper about "trekking", I take a photo & share it through the "trekking" broadcast. Its a touch point with people for something they like. I gently let them know that I remember them & would like to add value for their interest. Same can be used with clients

Non-verbal cues often speak louder than words. To convey confidence, be mindful of your body language. Maintain eye contact, stand tall, and use open gestures as these signal self-assurance and openness to engage. Conversely, closed-off postures or fidgeting can undermine your message. By aligning your body language with your intent, you reinforce the perception of confidence and competence.
-
Body language plays about 55% role as per research. Practicing positive body language and nonverbal cues will help you execute better. People notice your body language before the listen to you and draw a perception about you within a fraction of time. Thus, remaining mindful about body language and other nonverbal cues will definitely be a game changer 🙂
-
Focusing on your phone during conversations can significantly undermine your professional presence. Frequently looking away to check messages or notifications suggests disinterest and can sever the connection you’re trying to build. It sends a message that something else is more important than the interaction at hand. To convey respect and engagement, it’s crucial to keep your phone out of sight during meetings and discussions. This simple act of attentiveness enhances your perceived commitment and professionalism, fostering stronger, more genuine connections.
-
It's also important to keep things real—people respect and follow authenticity. Using body language wisely can make you more convincing without saying a word. Plus, infusing a bit of charisma into your interactions can captivate your audience and leave a memorable impression. Charisma is easier then most people think: 1. Show Genuine Interest: People are drawn to those who show authentic interest in their lives and experiences. Ask questions, listen actively. 2. Be Expressive: Use your voice and facial expressions to convey enthusiasm and emotion. Modulating your tone, varying your speech pace, and showing expressions that align with your message. 3. Use Positive Body Language: Open gestures, nodding, smiling.
-
Confidence is often conveyed through body language. By mastering confident posture, gestures, and eye contact, you can enhance your professional influence significantly.
-
Confidence is also a product of competence. Stay informed about industry trends and continually hone your skills. This not only ensures that you remain relevant but also boosts your self-assurance when discussing your field. Lifelong learning is a testament to your commitment to excellence and is a powerful tool for building both self-confidence and professional credibility.
-
Diversify Learning Sources: Explore various mediums such as books, articles, podcasts, online courses, workshops, and seminars to gain different perspectives and insights. Allocate Time for Learning: Schedule dedicated time for learning in your daily or weekly routine. Treat it as a priority rather than something you do only when you have free time. Practice Active Learning: Engage actively with the material by taking notes, asking questions, discussing with others, and applying what you've learned in real-life situations.
-
You can't teach curiosity; the most successful people in any profession constantly ask questions. Be the person who asks questions. Show that you want to learn, and others will gladly teach you. This is how you land the best projects, get tapped for new opportunities, build lasting bonds with colleagues, and create exciting career paths for yourself.
-
Continuous learning goes beyond just developing technical skills. There are soft skills a person must have to relate in business. So, consider developing your emotional intelligence (EQ) through networking events. Understanding others' communication styles and perspectives builds rapport, making you a more influential connector. People trust those who can not only talk the talk, but who genuinely listen and understand.
-
Not only does learning and competence give you more confidence, but you can then go and share your knowledge with others, which will indirectly increase your sales. Sharing your knowledge is a great excuse for a conversation, which most people will be happy to have. Giving people something for nothing builds rapport and trust. People will then see you as a go to person in your field, and will likely one day use your services or refer others to you.
-
In business you should be a professional or otherwise you will be offering substandard advice and solutions, so as a professional it is your duty to stay up to date with your industry and your sector. If you do this then you can be confident in your advice and in the solutions that you provide which will then come across in your conversations! There is no excuse for a lack of business or personal development so you need to ensure that you dedicate part of your working week to the constant updates to your industry knowledge and competitor info etc. You also need to create good habits of engaging in places and platforms where you can always keep on top of the new information and innovations in your sector that are constantly ongoing!
Finally, expanding your network is integral to growing your influence. Attend industry events, join professional groups, and engage in online forums where you can showcase your expertise. Every new connection is a potential advocate for your skills and an opportunity to demonstrate your confidence in a variety of settings. The more diverse your network, the broader your influence can extend.
-
You can never have too big of a network so this is another essential business tool that you have to find time too invest in, no matter how busy you are. You should connect and network with all of the key people in your sector and your target sectors in order to gain real influence in those areas. You should regularly attend events with your sector community where you can build strong long lasting relationships with the key people in these area so that many different types of business opportunities will develop over time!

ctively participate in industry events, join professional groups, and contribute to online forums. These platforms not only allow you to showcase your expertise but also to make valuable connections. Each new contact is a potential advocate for your skills and provides an opportunity to demonstrate your competence and confidence in various settings. The diversity of your network enriches your perspective and extends your reach, opening doors to new opportunities and collaborations that can propel your career forward.
-
On a personal level, I find that networking significantly enriches your life by providing a platform for exchanging ideas, gaining different perspectives, and forging meaningful connections. Whether you’re connecting with like-minded individuals at industry events, participating in online communities, or simply meeting someone for coffee, networking opens doors to growth and learning. Growing your network is key. Go to events and conferences and network. Do not be afraid to talk to anyone. They maybe your next client or sale. Never be afraid to ask, the worse they can do is say no. No= Next Opportunity

Speaking of confidence, I'd suggest to start with focusing on your self-confidence first. Develop a growth mindset (instead of a fixed one), create self-inclusion and learn how to reconcile opposites for yourself. Once you've been through this mental and psychological proces and create enough resilience, you can move ahead and reach out to others to create a psychologically safe environment with a sense of belonging leading to wellbeing. Developing trust is the key action all along this mental journey.
