Apple Reveals iPhone 13 (and mini), iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max

The new lineup includes better battery life

Apple on Tuesday unveiled the new iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The latest iPhones will bring even more advancements to the cameras and processing power of Apple’s smartphone lineup. The company showcased three new models during Tuesday’s Apple event, including the base iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The team only briefly mentioned the fourth model, the iPhone 13 mini.

The iPhone 13 will include a 20% smaller notch, compared to the iPhone 12, and also comes with an upgraded A15 chip to power its new advancements. Apple says the iPhone 13 should offer up to 2.5 hours more of battery life, compared to the 12, with storage options that start at 128GB, compared to the previous 64GB.

Additionally, the iPhone 13 now offers a 28% brighter screen, compared to the last generation. It’s unclear exactly how much of a performance gain the iPhone 13 will offer in everyday use compared to the iPhone 12, but Apple did note that the A15 includes a six-core setup made up of two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores. It also will be available in a smaller iPhone 13 mini, which Apple says will include the same upgrades and changes seen in the base iPhone 13.

The iPhone 13 will start at $799 and will be available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage tiers. The iPhone 13 mini will be available at $699 and is purchasable at the same storage sizes.

For those professional users out there, Apple also introduced the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. These two higher-end iPhones will include a 120Hz display, something seen in high-end Android flagships as well as Apple’s iPad line-up. This increased refresh rate will allow for a smoother and more responsive display.

Additionally, the iPhone 13 Pro lineup includes the A15 chip; however, the Pro models have been upgraded to a five-core GPU, which Apple claims is the fastest GPU in any smartphone. The three cameras are the biggest advancement over the base iPhone 13, though, and this year they include a 77mm telephoto lens with a 3x optical zoom, a f/1.8 aperture ultra-wide lens, which Apple claims has a 92% improvement in low light, and primary lens with a f/1.5 aperture.

The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max also will offer longer battery life than their previous iterations, with the 13 Pro lasting 1.5 hours longer than the 12 Pro, and the 13 Pro Max offering 2.5 hours of longer battery life compared to the 12 Pro Max.

The new iPhones also come with support for Apple’s new Cinematic Mode, which adds in a rack focus setting similar to what you’ve probably seen in movies and television shows. The feature basically lets the recorder focus on specific targets within the video, and even controls where that focus lies and how much depth there is to the video after recording has finished. This also will mark the first time that Apple’s sensor shift optical image stabilization is available on the base iPhone models, allowing for smoother video and photo recording.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will start at $999 and $1,099, respectively. On top of the standard 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, the iPhone 13 Pro models also will include a 1TB storage option. All the devices included in the iPhone 13 lineup will be available to preorder on Friday, and orders will begin shipping on September 24.
