HD Hyundai is collaborating with Google Cloud to advance its digital transformation using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Philip Moyer, Vice President of Google Cloud, and Aerin Jungmin Lee, Team Leader HD Hyundai AI Center, outlined how the two companies are mutually working on generative AI.

“At Google, we believe that AI is the biggest technology shift in our lifetime. Almost since our inception, Google has been focused on three types of artificial intelligence: personal AI, societal AI and business AI,” Moyer said. “We are so proud to be a partner with HD Hyundai because it’s an opportunity to improve safety, sustainability and predictability of construction sites.”

The partnership will introduce generative AI across Hyundai’s core businesses, including shipbuilding and construction machinery in Korea. Google Cloud will provide enterprise solutions like its Vertex AI platform to develop industry-specific AI applications.

For construction, Vertex AI will integrate with HD Hyundai’s X-Wise Xite, the company’s intelligent site management solution that connects different machines.

“Google’s Vertex AI platform allows generative AI models to be securely and privately trained,” Moyer said. “Together, we’re breaking new ground by training Google’s models to understand all the data that’s in X-Wise Xite, specific to the construction industry.”

Starting in January 2024, HD Hyundai will prioritize high-impact tasks, including building AI solutions tailored to each industry’s needs, creating AI-based platforms to enhance customer digital experiences and train AI experts.

“This is a great learning process for us, experimenting with all the different possibilities for what we can do, what insight and information we can draw from all the data we have,” Lee said.

HD Hyundai has already piloted a Generative AI service for after-sales calls at its construction equipment division. The collaboration with Google Cloud commenced in July 2023. It plans to establish a long-term AI roadmap to lead digital and business innovation.
