The modular faceplate design is especially smart, because if you get more scratches on the screen than you'd like, simply remove the faceplate and put on another one. With this ability, your screen can stay essentially perfect indefinitely. It also lets you change the look of your machine. Perhaps: silver for dressy occasions, camouflage for outdoor activities and sports, red for playing at home... or just whichever color you like most.
The Micro has a headphone jack for headphones (unlike the GBA SP), which is advisable because the tiny speaker holes can be easily covered with your thumb, and the speaker is honestly not very powerful. The on-off switch is recessed well into the bottom of the machine so as to not be hit accidentally unlike some GBA/DS iterations (I'm looking at you, original DS...) but the volume/brightness control is button-based, rather than operated with a slider, so volume/brightness can't be changed with the unit off. As for negative aspects of the Micro, the shoulder tabs are operated by buttons hidden underneath that are located closer to the middle of the unit than the corners, so one has to place their index fingers farther over the tops of the corners to reliably actuate them, unlike in units like the DSi where simply tapping on the very corners will suffice. This will often not be a problem, but it's worth noting.
Overall the Gameboy Micro is an excellent choice for a handheld console, even in an age of technically superior ones. Finally a portable unit that I can actually take everywhere. If you plan on buying a handheld to be used primarily on-the-go, this might be the best option. If you almost always play handhelds at home anyway, you may as well go for a DS Lite, DSi XL (and in a few months when mroe games come out, the 3DS) or PSP.
The back lit gba sp will play all gameboy games (the micro only plays gba). The back lit sp also has a better screen. The micro's screen looks crisper because the picture is so small but the colors look more faded compared to the vibrant back lit SP,the micro becomes a pain after a while in text heavy games (though is not too bad), and the micro screen (well technically the outer face-plate) is always scratched while the SP's screen is always perfect due to the clam shell design. If you do end up buying a micro and the screen is mint, make sure to keep it in a microfiber pouch whenever carrying it in your pocket. I have owned 3 micros and all of them have had the outer face-plates screen scratched a decent amount and its annoying to have a crisp screen being blurred by scratches on the face-plate.
This is an excellent system though, I highly recommend this if you already own a back lit SP and want an extra carry around gba. Though if I had to decide between the back-lit gba SP and the micro and could sacrifice a bit of portability, I would go for the SP. The more vibrant screen and backwards compatibility make it an easy choice.
The responsiveness of the d-pad makes playing brutally hard games like Megaman Zero possible. I also play Street fighter Alpha 3 on my mirco this is another example of the quality of the micro's d-pad. i can pull off any move with any character on the 1st try. I have never been able to say this with any other game control system.
But on to the system its self. It is beautiful beyond description. Every one will come up to you and ask what it is. I would play it in the break room at my old job. people never knew what it was and yet 4 people went out and bought one after seeing mine. Chicks digg it too.
Overall this is the best Gameboy to be released & the last gameboy to be released. I have owned every gameboy to ever be released. starting with the original grey gameboy. This some what is influenced by the fact that my birthday is in march the month nintendo always drops there new handhelds.
with the high quality buttons and screen this is a definite purchase. Buy one while you can.
