A federation of four states ( Yap , Chuuk
(Truk), Pohnpei
(Ponape) and Kosrae
(Kusaie)) in the Western Pacific. It became independent of the United States of America in 1986 but remains part of its postal system.

The national languages are Chuuk (38 341 speakers); English
(3 540 first-language speakers); Kosraean
(6 900 speakers); Ponapean
(27 700 speakers) and Yapese
(6 592 speakers). A further 11 languages are spoken.
Recently independent of the United States (1991), it still forms part of the United States’ postal system. Its state code is FM and its postal codes (ZIP Codes) fall in the range 96941-4.
The name of the island or reef may be included in the address.
