I'm happy to announce that QupZilla is becoming a KDE project!
What this effectively means for users is that everything (source hosting, bug tracking, continuous integration, wiki, ...) will move from GitHub to KDE infrastructure.
There will be no changes in project goals - all platforms currently supported will stay supported and there will be no hard dependencies on KDE libraries.
You can see the current status of the transition at QupZilla Incubator (community.kde.org) wiki page.
New name
I've been thinking about changing name for some time already, and now is a great opportunity to do so. However, choosing a good name is not easy and I already didn't do a good job in the past, so I need your help!
Name proposals can be entered on the Incubator wiki page or here in the comments.
Please note that even though the KDE relation, there doesn't have to be K in name - in fact, names without K are preferred now.
Next release (2.2) is still planned for this month aligned with Qt 5.9.2 release. All following releases will be made under KDE and, hopefully, with new name.
UPDATE: It was decided that Falkon will be the new name.

Delete(as for K-names, KDE as a community neither encourage or discourage them. It's up to the dev what a project should be named. Personally I find K-names to be a good thing. Yes it's cheesy and a bit dorky - BUT as a communicative tool its oddly effective. Everyone knows it's a KDE project and the name stick when the reader either goes "oh cool a K name" or "Oh no, not a K name!" both are extra actions that makes the reader remember the name clearer)
I don't insist on K-names.
Delete(I agree with you though)

ReplyDeleteWhy not Fiber? A name of a dead project for a web browser in KDE.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking exactly the same.

DeleteKDE is discouraging K- names for new apps...
ReplyDeleteI like Quantum, but it's Mozilla's codename for their updated Firefox stuff.
We've had Navigator → Explorer → Konqueror, so what about something like Wanderer?
Wanderer sounds really good. I like the continuity.

For K-name it could be "Kitsune" a japanese word for fox.
ReplyDeleteI personally like the name "Tern" based on a bird known for its long journeys.
I like Kitsune, it's a play on Firefox and also keeps the K theme!
DeleteKoolWave
ReplyDeletebecause the current logo looks like a wave (surfing/browsing the waves of the internet) and cool brings a refreshing association with lightness (and speed of browsing performance)
Ryōshi
ReplyDeleteI have some words in arabic:
ReplyDeleteKashif(revealer, the one who discover)
Safina or fulk (ship)
Gnina (means rabbit in algerian arabic)
Yes, an Arabic name would be cool. Gnina and Safina are already taken by other projects but Kashif and Fulk seem to be available.

Globe / Global / Globetrotter.
ReplyDeleteMy first preference is just using Fiber, that was a concept by Ken Vermette but it doesn't seeem he's working on it. Of course with his permission.
ReplyDeleteAbout K-names, I would suggest the same I did with Kirigami: it has a K but it doesn't replace a C. The kirigami is a Japanese art similar to origami.
It could be "Kirin", that is a Japanese mythological creature, cool for a browser. Yes, Japanese seems full of words with K.
Also, if you prefer the Q instead of K, Kirin can be written Quilin too.
DeleteKiran means a ray (of light or hope in Hindi). Starts with a K and is generally always used with a positive connotation as a ray of hope at the onset of new beginning.
ReplyDeleteI'm an native hindi speaker and it might be my bias but Kiran is a beautiful name and is very positive in its meaning. This is of course a personal opinion.

ReplyDeleteCowbell is great name. It is unique and interesting and puts a smile on my face.

ReplyDeleteI like Fiber. Because of the reference to fiber optic high speed lines.
ReplyDeleteI also like names like Surf (Surfer) as well since you 'surf' the web. It also connects with Dolphin as part of an oceanic naming theme. Wave is OK but not as obvious.
Basically I like names that give some clue as to what the program actually does.
Kamus or Camus

Delete+1 kOSMONAUGT
Delete+1 COSMONAUT
great one!
while i like it, i think its too big... We need something "catchy"
DeleteIt can even be Kosmonaut, that's the Czech version of cosmonaut.
DeleteAnon, it isn't too big compared to other browser names. Konqueror has the same number of syllables and letters and I belive everyone here would think it is catchy. Explorer and Firefox are also 3 syllables, but their full names are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which, tbh, is 2 words.
DeleteI do think you have a fair point, though. Epiphany comes to mind. It is hard to write at least for me (non-native) and if it is hard to write, it is hard to download.
But I think Cosmonaut is catchy, after all, who didn't want to become one when we were kids? It is awe inspiring and romantic. Cosmonaut rocks B)
Kiran feels genuinely good. Is simple to speak and has good meaning in certain Indic languages.

ReplyDeleteI think, that QupZilla (or maybe Qupzilla) is well known name, already. I don't think, that changing the name is good idea.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Why are you changing it, if a K name isn't even the goal? Trademark concerns (because of the "Zilla" part)?
Delete+1
DeleteI think that to inherit Konqueror is the best choice
ReplyDeleteIf not, +1 to Fiber
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete+1 for Konqueror. Konqueror was not only the best application on all open source, even its name was solid.
ReplyDeletePlus, you could re-use its old motto: "Conquer your desktop" - or, in this case, "Conquer the web"!
But all in all, the name thing is superflous. I'm happy you're joining KDE. I just hope Qupzilla becomes the de-facto web browser for KDE, fully integrated with it (using KDE apis, Kparts for viewing stuff -katepart, okular for online PDF's...).
If the challenge is a new name, I think "Möbius" could be an lovely option.
ReplyDeleteHow about Wowser.
ReplyDeleteReading through the prior suggestions, 2 names stood out to me. One in Arabic "Kashif" and one in Hindi "Kiran". I particularly liked Kashif - the revealer.
ReplyDeleteA couple of suggestions:
ReplyDelete- Compass (or Kompass), for obvious reasons
- Nickel, given that it uses webEngine, which is basically Chromium
Diamond
ReplyDeleteLexi
Krystal
Kandy
Just call it Q
ReplyDeleteI would suggest:
ReplyDeleteicarus (ikarus || iqarus)
According to Greek mythology Icarus, son of Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth (which i see as the web), fly too close to the sun and his wings (made by his father) melted...
There is also Theseus... but it does not work so well...
Ooh, I just proposed a name but I actually love your suggestion! Ikarus (Icarus, idc about the variant) would be an awesome name for a web browser! :)
Deletethank you :)
Delete(there are already a bunch of "ikarus" already, but no iqarus, AFAIK)
- Portal
ReplyDelete- Gateway
- Inlet
Not particularly fond of "Fiber" - reminds me of a stool softener - and I can just think of the jokes now. Also, anything with "*zilla" or "Chrome*" or "*ium" is just over done. Before suggesting something people should do a quick google search - just to make sure it isn't already being used. If I think of something somewhat original, I'll post it - but drawing a blank now.

Fiber or QutZilla sounds very good.
ReplyDeleteKowbell (or Cowbell) made me crack up. Not sure if that is the first criteria for a great name, but it is definitely fun. Wowser also made me laugh, but it might be a bit distracting to surf with the Wowser Browser.
ReplyDeleteKhoros and the venerable Konqueror are solid names.
Browsir
ReplyDelete1-Zilla has no legitimate place in the name of any web browser that is not built using a Mozilla browser engine. Mozilla-engined browsers are the only browsers whose engine development and goals are not driven by mega-corporate pecuniary interests Google, Microsoft and Apple.
ReplyDelete2-Mozilla users have long deserved a reliable, full-featured, QT-toolkit-based web browser, one not dependent upon being built using GTK. KDE would be a natural environment for fulfilling that need.
3-Konqueror's KHTML remains the sole web engine capable of by default permitting a computer to do with web content what it was designed to do, automatically compute object sizes with accuracy. Some years ago, web standards were changed to dispense with this ability. Blink, Edge, Trident and Webkit engines all complied unconditionally. Mozilla's Gecko engine reserved a proprietary facility to retain it, but otherwise complied. Konqueror using KHTML failed to comply. By so doing, it remains the only web browser able to automatically, or at all other than by happenstance, render objects at accurate physical sizes. To do so it depends only on Xorg or its equivalent to provide a logical display density that equals physical display density. Konqueror using KHTML remains the only web browser which unconditionally permits automatic rendering where a displayed inch measures an inch, a cm a cm, and a pt a pt.
how about:
ReplyDelete- Kuat (spell it like Quad). It's an Indonesian language which means "Strong"
- Killa
- KupZilla
or maybe "Knot" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knot_(unit)
ReplyDeleteI vote for Fennec or Fennek

ReplyDeleteI know this browser as QupZilla, so to remember this browser again, i prefer the name is only "Qup" or "QupBrowser". Zilla is an iconic name for Mozilla (Firefox Maker).
ReplyDeleteHow about kite browser, kite like the bird that looks like eagle?
ReplyDeleteAlso kite is similar to appearance to falcon and starts with k
ReplyDeleteIts not the place to talk about it now, but is there any possibility that firefox sync can be added to qupzilla like gnome did with epiphany? It makes life much easier when switching between desktops and mobile devices besides providing backups for bookmarks and saved passwords
ReplyDeleteWhy not "Aragog"or "Acromentule" ?
ReplyDeleteThous names are affiliates to spiders in Harry Potter). What would be better than a magic spider to browse the web ?

ReplyDeleteHere are some more suggestions:
ReplyDeleteNau - the Portuguese name for the biggest ships used in times of the Great Discoveries of Columbus and Vasco da Gama. Goes nicely with the current logo and has a reference to both Konqueror and Navigator.
Webscape - an obvious name with an obvious reference.
Multiverse - a reference to the multitude of things one can do online using one piece of software - a browser.
Eagle - flies high, sees far, hunts quick.
Spider - the one who weaves and controls the web.
Quantum - a reference to the interconnectedness of the web and the ability of being in multiple places at once.
Quicksilver (Mercury) - a reference to Qt and a pun towards Chrome (Chromium).
I also thought about Quantum and Quicksilver, but prefer Quantum.
Delete+1 Quantum
This is great. We have been waiting for a Qt based modern browser for a long time.

ReplyDeleteFollowing the Kirigami UI framework would be a nice way to integrate plasma.
ReplyDeletethe software gives you access to so much, you can call it 'Infinity'.
ReplyDeleteWhat's about "Drakkar"?
ReplyDelete"KITE" - light and fast. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteI propose the name of:
ReplyDeleteSurflash
elKano
ReplyDeleteBeagle - apart from the dog breed an allusion to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Beagle the ship on which Charles Darwin embarked as a naturalist.

'Qashmiri' (or maybe 'Qashmir') close to word Kashmiri which denoted types of wools or fibers, collected from Kashmir region in continental India. The wool is now commonly called cashmere. Name 'Kashyape' is origin of the word kashmere.
ReplyDeleteSo can we agree that "Kiran" is the winner?
ReplyDeleteI liked the Qashmiri name a lot. So I bought the domains www.qashmiri.org and www.qashmiri.com . I can move ownership after 60 days per goDaddys user terms. You can contact me via email from whois if needed.

ReplyDeleteFalkner Web browser is registered on the Google Play Store for at least the last two years. Check out yourself please.
ReplyDeleteFalkon, really? It seems like you're acting pretty haphazardly; giving up a brand, and the good reputation and goodwill it's earned, to give it a new name. Why? For something that sounds "cool"?
ReplyDeleteFalkon doesn't sound very original, and when people search repos for "falcon" they're going to see a python web framework.
Your project though. Do what you want obviously.
Flakon is the worst ("Qube" or "Ion" were better options). There are already other projects related to intenet using that name, such as Apache Foundation and Twitter Client.
ReplyDeleteFalkon?! ha.. Oh well, too late now.
ReplyDelete
