QupZilla is moving under KDE and looking for new name

I'm happy to announce that QupZilla is becoming a KDE project!

What this effectively means for users is that everything (source hosting, bug tracking, continuous integration, wiki, ...) will move from GitHub to KDE infrastructure.
There will be no changes in project goals - all platforms currently supported will stay supported and there will be no hard dependencies on KDE libraries.

You can see the current status of the transition at QupZilla Incubator (community.kde.org) wiki page.

New name
I've been thinking about changing name for some time already, and now is a great opportunity to do so. However, choosing a good name is not easy and I already didn't do a good job in the past, so I need your help!
Name proposals can be entered on the Incubator wiki page or here in the comments.
Please note that even though the KDE relation, there doesn't have to be K in name - in fact, names without K are preferred now.

Next release (2.2) is still planned for this month aligned with Qt 5.9.2 release. All following releases will be made under KDE and, hopefully, with new name.

UPDATE: It was decided that Falkon will be the new name.

(as for K-names, KDE as a community neither encourage or discourage them. It's up to the dev what a project should be named. Personally I find K-names to be a good thing. Yes it's cheesy and a bit dorky - BUT as a communicative tool its oddly effective. Everyone knows it's a KDE project and the name stick when the reader either goes "oh cool a K name" or "Oh no, not a K name!" both are extra actions that makes the reader remember the name clearer)

I like Quantum, but it's Mozilla's codename for their updated Firefox stuff.

We've had Navigator → Explorer → Konqueror, so what about something like Wanderer?

  19. My first preference is just using Fiber, that was a concept by Ken Vermette but it doesn't seeem he's working on it. Of course with his permission.

About K-names, I would suggest the same I did with Kirigami: it has a K but it doesn't replace a C. The kirigami is a Japanese art similar to origami.

It could be "Kirin", that is a Japanese mythological creature, cool for a browser. Yes, Japanese seems full of words with K.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also, if you prefer the Q instead of K, Kirin can be written Quilin too.

      Delete
  20. Kiran means a ray (of light or hope in Hindi). Starts with a K and is generally always used with a positive connotation as a ray of hope at the onset of new beginning.

I'm an native hindi speaker and it might be my bias but Kiran is a beautiful name and is very positive in its meaning. This is of course a personal opinion.

  22. I like Fiber. Because of the reference to fiber optic high speed lines.
I also like names like Surf (Surfer) as well since you 'surf' the web. It also connects with Dolphin as part of an oceanic naming theme. Wave is OK but not as obvious.

Basically I like names that give some clue as to what the program actually does.

      Delete
    7. Anon, it isn't too big compared to other browser names. Konqueror has the same number of syllables and letters and I belive everyone here would think it is catchy. Explorer and Firefox are also 3 syllables, but their full names are Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which, tbh, is 2 words.

I do think you have a fair point, though. Epiphany comes to mind. It is hard to write at least for me (non-native) and if it is hard to write, it is hard to download.

But I think Cosmonaut is catchy, after all, who didn't want to become one when we were kids? It is awe inspiring and romantic. Cosmonaut rocks B)

  34. +1 for Konqueror. Konqueror was not only the best application on all open source, even its name was solid.
Plus, you could re-use its old motto: "Conquer your desktop" - or, in this case, "Conquer the web"!

But all in all, the name thing is superflous. I'm happy you're joining KDE. I just hope Qupzilla becomes the de-facto web browser for KDE, fully integrated with it (using KDE apis, Kparts for viewing stuff -katepart, okular for online PDF's...).

  41. Not particularly fond of "Fiber" - reminds me of a stool softener - and I can just think of the jokes now. Also, anything with "*zilla" or "Chrome*" or "*ium" is just over done. Before suggesting something people should do a quick google search - just to make sure it isn't already being used. If I think of something somewhat original, I'll post it - but drawing a blank now.

Khoros and the venerable Konqueror are solid names.

  50. 1-Zilla has no legitimate place in the name of any web browser that is not built using a Mozilla browser engine. Mozilla-engined browsers are the only browsers whose engine development and goals are not driven by mega-corporate pecuniary interests Google, Microsoft and Apple.

2-Mozilla users have long deserved a reliable, full-featured, QT-toolkit-based web browser, one not dependent upon being built using GTK. KDE would be a natural environment for fulfilling that need.

3-Konqueror's KHTML remains the sole web engine capable of by default permitting a computer to do with web content what it was designed to do, automatically compute object sizes with accuracy. Some years ago, web standards were changed to dispense with this ability. Blink, Edge, Trident and Webkit engines all complied unconditionally. Mozilla's Gecko engine reserved a proprietary facility to retain it, but otherwise complied. Konqueror using KHTML failed to comply. By so doing, it remains the only web browser able to automatically, or at all other than by happenstance, render objects at accurate physical sizes. To do so it depends only on Xorg or its equivalent to provide a logical display density that equals physical display density. Konqueror using KHTML remains the only web browser which unconditionally permits automatic rendering where a displayed inch measures an inch, a cm a cm, and a pt a pt.

Nau - the Portuguese name for the biggest ships used in times of the Great Discoveries of Columbus and Vasco da Gama. Goes nicely with the current logo and has a reference to both Konqueror and Navigator.

Webscape - an obvious name with an obvious reference.

Multiverse - a reference to the multitude of things one can do online using one piece of software - a browser.

Eagle - flies high, sees far, hunts quick.

Spider - the one who weaves and controls the web.

Quantum - a reference to the interconnectedness of the web and the ability of being in multiple places at once.

Quicksilver (Mercury) - a reference to Qt and a pun towards Chrome (Chromium).
