Submit a Paper to SSRN

Solution

First, is your paper eligible for posting on SSRN? Read this FAQ to find out.

Watch our SSRN Submission Demo or read the instructions below to learn how to submit a paper to SSRN.

How to create a new SSRN Submission

1. Sign in (or create a free account) with SSRN

2. Click "My Papers" on the menu to the left of the User HQ Welcome page.

3. Click "Start New Submission."

4. Click on each field of the Submission Form to expand it and enter the correct information. Many authors choose to copy and paste the required information from their PDF to fill in the submission form more quickly.

Remember to click "save" after completing each field.

PDF

  • If you have a PDF containing the full text of the paper and would like to make it available for download, scroll to the top of the page and click "Upload full text PDF document."
  • Click "Choose File" or "Browse" to select the correct document from your computer.

There are instructions for creating a PDF on our FAQ page.

Availability

  • If you want your paper to be publicly available on SSRN and online, select the option "Publicly Available in the SSRN eLibrary." Assuming it is accepted, your paper will be available in the SSRn eLibrary, searchable on SSRN and by outside search engines, and may be eligibile to distribute in one or more of our eJournals.
  • If you want to restrict who can see your paper on SSRN to those you share it, then select the option "Privately Available (distributable by me)." Only someone who knows the exact URL for this submission on SSRN will be able to view the paper.

Title

  • Click "enter Paper Title" and type or copy and paste the title of the paper.

Note that the first letter of each world will be capitalized when you click "save" for this field. If you want to change this, click on the field again, make the change and then click "save" a second time. Your changes will hold.

Authors

  • If you are not the only author of the paper, or are submitting the paper on behalf of the author(s), click your name to enter the rest of the authors.
  • Enter the authors by typing their name in the search box. If their name does not appear, click "Enter new author" and enter the author's information to create their account.

You can move the authors up and down in order on the submission form by using the arrows beside each author's name.

Note that the submitter is automatically entered as an author. If you are not the author, click the button beside "Assistant." You will retain access to the submission through your My Papers page, but will not be listed as an author on the paper.

Date

  • Click "enter Paper Date" and enter the date the paper was written/completed.

Type

  • Click "Working Paper Series."

If your paper has not been published or accepted by a publisher, it is a "working paper."

  • If your paper has been accepted or published, select the APS option. Then enter the name of the journal or other publication in which your paper appeared/will appear in the Search box. Enter the reference information (eg. volume number, issue number, date, etc.) when prompted. If the paper it forthcoming, enter zeros in all these fields. ("Forthcoming" will be displayed.)

Abstract, Keywords, JEL Codes

  • Click "enter Abstract Body, Keywords, JEL Codes." Enter the requested information.

The abstract you type into the submission form does not have to be the actual abstract of the paper. It should include a summary of what the paper is about, what conclusions your paper presents, etc.

JEL codes are used in the field of Economics. This field is optional.

Classifications

  • Click "enter Classifications."
  • If you know which subject matters your paper is relevant to, select them by typing keywords into the search box, or browse through our Networks to select appropriate classifications.
  • If you're unsure of how to classify your paper, or would rather have SSRN complete this step, select "Have SSRN select eJournal Classifications for this paper."

Once the submission form is complete, you will see "Complete" and a checkmark next to each item on the Status box (to the right of the page).

When you are sure that all the information has been input correctly on the submission form, click "Submit to SSRN" in the status box to the right.

After you click Submit, our system will run through your submission. You may see "loading" icons appear and flash on your screen. A box will pop up asking you to certify that you have permission to post the paper. Check the box if you have permission, then click "Submit." If you do not complete this step, your paper will remain unsubmitted!

If you want your submission to be available on SSRN right away, check the "Make Immediately Available" option. Your paper will appear, with a watermark, on the public SSRN site. The watermark will be removed when your paper is processed.

Your submission should be processed within 24-48 hours after you click "Submit to SSRN."
