I drove through UofI UC recruiting Greg. I was also active in the early Unix users group meetings. One of those meetings was at UC, I think. I think your dad also went to most of these meetings. Sorry about your dad. I must leave a hole growing up without a father figure. Welcome to google. Maybe I will see you there sometime. I am essentially retired, but I do come in once in a while. ken On Mon, Aug 25, 2014 at 6:31 PM, Donald Gillies wrote: > Dear Ken, > > Greg Chesson told me that, once upon a time, he came to U of Illinois to > study CS and convinced his thesis advisor - my dad - to take out UNIX > License #1 (mostly at Greg's wise urging, but also my dad was searchingfor > a tool to make PDP-11's widely accessible to students since front-panel > interaction was lost in the 1960's.) > > My dad died suddenly a few months later, in July 1975, of a rare virus - he > was 46 and I was just 13 years old. Donald,

I recognize both the name and the picture,
so I am sure I met him. I drove through
UofI UC recruiting Greg. I was also active
in the early Unix users group meetings.
One of those meetings was at UC, I think.
I think your dad also went to most of these
meetings.

Sorry about your dad. I must leave a hole
growing up without a father figure.

Welcome to google.
Maybe I will see you there sometime.
I am essentially retired, but I do come
in once in a while.
