General FAQs

Why is the service ending?

WebTV (later called MSN TV) started in 1996 with the goal to bring new people "online" and to give those already online an easy, hassle-free means of accessing the internet from the comfort of their homes. Later, MSN TV 2 was released with vastly greater power and features. Since then, the web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the internet. Accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to end the MSN TV service on September 30th, 2013. We are working with our customers to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible.

When is the service ending?

The service will be ending on September 30th, 2013.

What do I need to do before the service ends?

Before the service ends, you need to make sure that all the users on your account have saved the data that you care about, including mail, favorites, and photos. See the MSN TV Closure FAQ or MSN TV 2 Closure FAQ (whichever service subscription applies to you) for more details on what you should do.

What is a Microsoft account?

A Microsoft account is your email address and password that you use to sign in to access services like Outlook.com (for emails), SkyDrive (for favorites, photos, and other files saved to SkyDrives online storage), and People (for contacts). To find out more about your Microsoft account, go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/sign-in-what-is-microsoft-account. In the past, if you created a Windows Live ID or a Passport, that is now your Microsoft account.

How can I access my email, contacts, and favorites after the service ends?

Go to http://www.outlook.com from a computer or smartphone, and sign in with your Microsoft account and password. Your mail inbox will be displayed by default. To access your address book contacts, select the down arrow to the right of the Outlook logo, and then select the People app. Your favorites are stored on SkyDrive. To access your favorites from Outlook.com, select the down arrow again, and then select the SkyDrive app.

What if I have users on my account whose information I dont wish to save?

If you have users on your account that you dont plan on using, the easiest solution is to remove them from your account before the service ends. Sign in as the primary user. Then, from the home page, choose Settings, Extra users, and remove the users from your account that you dont want.

How can I cancel my service immediately?

For MSN TV subscribers, call 800-469-3288; for MSN TV 2 subscribers, call 866-466-7688.

What happens if I cancel my service before September 30th, 2013?

If you cancel your service before it ends on September 30th, 2013, you still want to ensure that you have saved the data that you care about, including mail, favorites, and photos. If you do not do this, you will not have access to this data after the service ends, and the data will be lost. Again, see the MSN TV Closure FAQ or MSN TV 2 Closure FAQ (whichever service subscription applies to you) for more details on what you should do

Do I need to return the MSN TV set-top box to Microsoft after the service ends?

No. The MSN TV set-top box is yours to keep. If you plan on discarding your set-top box, we highly recommend that you recycle it. Most cities offer electronics recycling. You will need to check your area to find out whats available.

What if I have specific questions regarding the MSN TV service?

Please see the Closure FAQ for MSN TV at http://www.msntv.com/msntv/ClosureFAQ.asp.

What if I have specific questions regarding the MSN TV 2 service?

Please see the Closure FAQ for MSN TV 2 at http://www.msntv.com/msntv2/ClosureFAQ.asp.

How can I tell if I have an MSN TV or MSN TV 2 set-top box?

If you have an MSN TV 2 set-top box, it will say msntv 2 on the front of the box.

Billing

When will the last charge be on my credit card or debit card?

For MSN TV and MSN TV 2 service subscribers, your last charge will be your regular bill cycle date that occurs in August, 2013. For example, if your bill cycle date is the 15th of each month, you will be charged your regular monthly fee on August 15th, but you will not be charged on September 15th. You will thereafter be able to continue using the service through the last day of service on September 30th, 2013.

If I cancel the service before September 30th, 2013, how will that affect my bill?

The Microsoft MSN TV Team will mail you a refund for all prepaid credit balances you have.

If I prepay by mailed check, how do I get a refund for payments for the months after August, 2013?

The Microsoft MSN TV Team will issue you a refund for all prepaid credit balances you have. It will be mailed to you.

Is there a charge for using Outlook.com and SkyDrive?

No. When upgrading to Outlook.com (formerly called Hotmail), you will create a Microsoft account. Both Outlook.com and SkyDrive are free services offered as part of your account.
