An Open Letter to
Mozilla Corporation

Mozilla, if you act on your plan to block third-party cookies in your Firefox browser, thousands of ad-supported small businesses like us may be forced to close. Most long tail websites cannot afford to hire a staff to sell advertising inventory directly to advertisers. And as much as advertisers—both big, national brands as well as small, local businesses—value the deeply interested users that smaller, niche websites attract, they do not have the resources to negotiate thousands of deals independently with website owners around the world. Ad networks fill this need. They enable advertisers to easily reach their target audiences across the wide and expansive internet, and they empower small publishers to earn revenue from the content they create. Without third-party cookies, this small-business engine goes away.

On behalf of the IAB Long Tail Alliance, thousands of other small publishers across the world, the advertisers that rely on them, and the millions of consumers who enjoy the diversity of content and services the internet provides, we ask you, Mozilla, to reconsider your decision to block third-party cookies. The internet is a beacon of innovation, education, entertainment, and entrepreneurship. Let’s work together to keep it that way. We hope you make the right choice.
