Core update with Do Not Track, and mail and theme fixes

This is an Opera 12 (Wahoo) snapshot.

As you can see from the changelog, this build introduces quite a few fixes, changes and improvements. Since there's a lot of it, I'll highlight a few important things below.

Privacy

This Wahoo build adds support for Do Not Track, which allows browser users to opt out of being tracked on the web. It is currently disabled by default, but can be enabled by enabling the following option in Opera's Preferences dialog: "Preferences > Advanced > Security > Ask websites not to track me"

Note that this will only work if the site actually honors the request. Few sites currently do, and the effect of DNT will have to be evaluated to see if it is a viable solution in the long run.

SSL performance

This build also introduces a first round of optimizations for faster SSL handling (CORE-41667):

  • TCP optimization to eliminate roundtrips
  • Improved session negotiation to save on waiting times
  • Improved connection handling which improves both HTTP and HTTPS connections
  • Quicker closing of connections allows for new connections at an earlier stage
  • Parallelizing OCSP/CRL uses half as much time to do revocation checking
  • Strict transport security improves security and will also improve speed when servers start using this feature

As an example, the first load at skandiabanken.no was reduced by one second or more. With 10 subsequent page loads, the time to open the page was almost cut in half in total.

XHR

With CORE-41784 (XMLHttpRequest Level 2 upload and progress events), we completed our support for progress events in XMLHttpRequest, for upload, download, and timeout update. This will improve the upload experience on Google services (no more Flash uploaders on YouTube and Gmail), and more sites are to follow.

More

There are numerous other improvements, including Core, mail and theme fixes. Take a look at the changelog for more information.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes, and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

WooHoo, finally a the Wahoo release we've been waiting for.

EricJH Friday, February 10, 2012 3:27:09 PM

Congrats with the release. That's an impressive list.sherlock

I knew you would come up with something substantial because it's been so quiet with Wahoo releases since the beginning of the year.cheers

Muneer Hassan Abdullamha2999 Friday, February 10, 2012 3:29:53 PM

yes I have been waiting for this

ClashCityRockerclashcityrocker Friday, February 10, 2012 3:33:27 PM

Now that's what i'm talking about...

But shame it arrived a day after the 64bit/plugin refersh :-(

Avola Friday, February 10, 2012 3:40:22 PM

Upgrading from the last 11.62 snapshot removed all my toolbar buttons. But it was an easy fix to just reset it to default.
Nice changelog up

MaximSailorMax Friday, February 10, 2012 3:40:27 PM

Menu bar is broken with Windows XP without Hardware acceleration.
+ on upgrade I lost "Back" and "Forward" (first two) buttons in address bar...

Matheusnom4d3br Friday, February 10, 2012 3:40:29 PM

Still crashing when typing numbers on url field.
This is very annoying cause I have to access a lot of internal IPs :/

nanana1 Friday, February 10, 2012 3:40:57 PM

Finally, we've got a build that's got much to test !wizard

http://www.zigiz.com/en-EN/play/board+games/14/fun/mahjong.html

When u create a couple of pieces they desapear so slow.
THis happens long time ago in 12 builds.

Even Opera do not close after play that game

ETA: Okay, too slow, already reported. wink

DSK-349657 Unintended background color behind message counts

I think that I've seen that one few times recently, that was really weird. ;-)

Still waiting for previously mentioned favicons return (address filed dropdown).

Avola Friday, February 10, 2012 3:47:59 PM

The extension Open With Long-Click now opens tabs on the left side of the current tab for some reason. Opera's built-in tab opening options still opens on the right as expected. Win7 x64

ClashCityRockerclashcityrocker Friday, February 10, 2012 3:49:38 PM

I always keep on eye on the Opera Web standards page, it tells me what the core changes are quite some time before they arrive.

DNT was listed a month back.

Next up, HTML5 Drag and Drop (Presto 2.10.270)...

eliotcougar Friday, February 10, 2012 3:52:41 PM

Nice update... There are noticeable performance improvements indeed...

Too bad HTML5 videos on YouTube are still very CPU demanding, has display artefacts and are virtually unusable...
box-shadow + CSS Transitions = soooo slooooow...
WebGL demos on chromeexperiments are mostly broken...

ruaman Friday, February 10, 2012 4:04:43 PM

Awesome yikes yes bigsmile

MaximSailorMax Friday, February 10, 2012 4:05:36 PM

Choosing search engine in search-field now happens on mouse down event. Early was on mouse up, as any other menu. Is it known bug?

Satan D. Lucifersupertrol Friday, February 10, 2012 4:05:56 PM

This build scores a 360+9 in html5test.com

(be sure to enable websockets in opera:config so you can see the real score of every new build)

i notice memory usage is improve little bit(in my system compare to the last wahoo build)

and some https sites that i visit load faster than 11.61

and improved JS performance too.happy

and one of the sites that i visit is loading perfectly now(with the core update to 2.10.255)
bigsmile

When using themes, the browser window can not be resized in both directions at the same time, vertically and horizontally, by dragging on the corners. Only the bottom right corner allows it.

JackWagon Friday, February 10, 2012 4:29:56 PM

Massive change list...very impressive. I've always had the sense that while Opera benchmarks very fast, the connections were slower than WebKit. Nice to see that's been addressed.

When you guys get HW acceleration sorted out, this is going to be a killer!
As it is, I'm still preferring HW accel = 0.

alf245 Friday, February 10, 2012 4:37:50 PM

@TCP optimization devs:
Opera has difficulties to load ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/ completely. I've tried to load it 50 times and it has got loaded completely only 41 times. So there is a miss of approximately 20%. Other browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera 10.11) don't have this kind of problem. Debian testing (amd64) here.

Fhury Friday, February 10, 2012 4:43:30 PM

PengePenge4 Friday, February 10, 2012 4:46:09 PM

Regression: The tabs are opened from extensions are open in the most-left side.

"Note that this will only work if the site actually honors the request."

So this development is quite useless. Unfortunately... Because if it's not mandatory no one will care. sad

BTW specially thanks for these: DSK-340411, DSK-320233, DSK-350332, DSK-353996, DSK-350960

CORE-38412 Some progressive JPEGs aren't decoded properly

eliotcougar Friday, February 10, 2012 5:02:24 PM

Oh... I just wonder will Opera's Hardware Acceleration use OpenGL path rendering API (as a cross-platform alternative to Direct2D)?.. Sounds promising...

Still no Minimize/Maximize(Restore)/Close when decorations are enabled in Linux, huh? Yes, it's okay when you set Show Border (or is that reset ... the icons may be backwards on the menu - well anyway, when the window border is shown) but it really should integrate in the Tab bar when the border in not shown like it does in Windows.

It happens with all links that open in background tab, for example when using Reddit Enhancement Suite.

There is an one or two pixels gap between status bar and opened Dragonfly.

Thomas Grabowtcgrabow Friday, February 10, 2012 5:25:36 PM

Main bar lost in both XP and VISTA.
fwd-back arrows lost in XP.

The button in both can be used if you hover over them to select.

Memory use on Vista box is double that for 11.61.

Nice update smile

btw, Isn't it time we switched from
Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; U; Edition Next; en) Presto/2.10.255 Version/12.00
to
Opera/12.00 (Windows NT 6.1; U; Edition Next; en) Presto/2.10.255
?
Both Chrome & Firefox versions have reached double digits. Esp with a 12.0 launch, isn't this the right time to switch back to the normal format?

MichałEmdek Friday, February 10, 2012 5:43:00 PM

I was just about to post that. Opera hangs and seems to max out CPU usage when you try to add a bookmark through the star menu. Adding to the speed dial through the star menu seems to work.

Win7 x64.

QuHno Friday, February 10, 2012 5:55:17 PM

2 crashes and 3 times shooting the latest "stable" *1) graphics driver of the Catalyst 12.1 package for my AMD HD 6870 2GB GDDR5 card on w7x64 in less than 15 minutes is too much.

I'd like to test this build because of the other changes but without an option to send valuable information about the driver crashes it makes no sense. Stability is of higher priority than other things on my computer, so I primarily tests for it first.

In comparison the updated 64 bit OOP labs build works just works fine out of the box for me, even on my small computer with just an AMD 3300 on-board graphics card and shared memory - and on my laptop with a Geforce 7000M card too. No crashes, no killing the graphics driver despite torturing it during the tests.

*1) Yes, I know that the OpenGL drivers of all vendors still suck, but in my eyes that doesn't mean that Opera is allowed to crash them.
