Shiira Project

Shiira is a web browser based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa. The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. All source code used in this software is publicly available.

We had released Shiira 2.2 on July 18. It contains 12 localized resources (Japanese, English, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Portugues, Spanish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese). Thank you for your help

Today, we've released source codes of Shiira 2.2. It also contains HMDT frameworks (HMDTFoundation, HMDTAppKit, and HMDTWebKit). If you had failed to build with Shiira 2.1, please try new source codes.

Twelve localized resources were integrated.

We released new version, Shiira 2.1. The main puropse of this version is to support new Web Kit, installed by Safari 3.0. We fixed many issues with that, and integrated new features.

It is our pleasure to announce the release of the latest version of our Web browser, Shiira 2.0. This version is absolutely new.

Since Shiira 2.0 has many new features, it was hard to prepare introduction page. We are now working on it, but you do not need to wait for it. Just download and try it.

We know that Shiira 2.0 still has some problems. We are working on them, and you will get fixed version via Appcasting technologies embeded in Shiira 2.0.

Shiira project is not dead. It's time to be reborn.

The server had crashed! We've got new machine, but, the log of discussion board was lost.

We prepared new group, and localized user interface. Please use new board.

Released Shiira 2.0b2. Fixed many bugs and implemented some new features. Still in development.

We release Shiira 2.0b1, that is the "Preview of New Version". Note that this is a beta version software. Very unstable and many features are not implemented yet.

We planed to create absolute new user interface for 2.0. It was hard to extend 1.x style interface. We discussed "what is the best user interface for the browser of the latest Mac OS X" from scratch.

We had made a lot of prototypes. We had tested various interfaces and dropped them. We had tried to implement many features and provide simple interface, both. Shiira user interface expects drastic changes, but still that is Shiira.

The purpose of this release is to introduce our new design. Almost fixed. We will implement remained features.

Shiira 2.0 required Mac OS X 10.4, because one of the purpose of the Shiira project is to leverage latest Mac OS X features, ex. Core Data. But we have plan to release the successor of current 1.2 version, that is for 10.3.

Shiira is a web browser written in Cocoa. It uses the KHTML rendering engine provided by Apple's Web Kit. Since this is the same rendering engine used by Safari, HTML content rendered by Shiira will look the same as in Apple's own browser.

The Shiira Project is an attempt to development a web browser using Web Kit. All source codes used in this software are publicly available under the BSD license. We hope that our code will help other developers just starting out on their own Web Kit projects.

The first milestone and initial intention was to create a test application using Web Kit. We accomplished this early on in the development process, Shiira now has the ability to call on every Web Kit API function.

Our next step was to create a full-featured web browser similar to Safari. We've accomplished that with thre release of Shiira 1.0.

Now that Shiira 1.0 is released, we are evaluating future development of the web browser. We have a lot of top secret ideas in store for the future of Shiira, and you'll see some them when implemented in Shiira 1.x.

Since Shiira becomes too big to develop and support by only one person, I made the staff team for this project. We are working to develop Shiira, debug it, and create new project Web page.
